In a series the Flames lost in 5. In an ideal situation Backlund would have been the 3C three or four years ago. A team with that depth would have contended. I have nothing against Backlund but the luxury of having him as the 3C could have made a big difference the last few years with an appropriate 2C upgrade.

He was also the 2C in a series they won, and for 82 games in which they finished first in their division.

As for ideal situations, Backlund would have been the 3C a couple of years ago if Monahan's hips hadn't gone to pieces.
