The thing to remember is that defensive play is a lot harder to quantify, because it depends so heavily on opposition, teamwork, and systems. Both Gudbranson and Zadorov had often been called upon to play too high up the roster, on teams that weren't gelling defensively, and in systems that didn't suit their abilities.
I am certain that Treliving acquired those two players because he knew exactly what roles Darryl Sutter wanted them to play, and he agreed with the plan. Put the same guys on the Banff Fighting Squirrels or [insert bottom feeder here] and they'd probably still be living down to their JFresh cards.
