We're nitpicking. It's what we do. The best thing is just to let us do it.

There's no way this continues beyond this week. Vladar needs to take the Edm, Det, Buf, Arz games at minimum or Markstrom is going to be ground to a pulp playing the vast majority of the 16 games this month. With 15 more waiting in April, the spread will have to get better or we will be looking at 65 starts and who knows where that leaves our goaltending situation going into the playoffs.

The Flames' record against top, middle, and bottom teams (based on CURRENT standings):

Against top 10: 10-3-1, 0.750
Against mid 11.: 6-4-1, 0.591
Against bot 10: 12-2-1, 0.833

It's those damn middling teams that give us trouble. Two losses each to EDM and SJS

Also, the only losses against top 10 teams came on that 3 game stretch where they were recovering from Covid and had hardly played in a month

I highly doubt that Sutter will play his backup against the best team in the country

I'm pretty sure every fanbase of good teams claims their team "plays down to the opposition". and then at the end of the year you look and say "no, actually they ate them up".

This one's gonna be a home game with presumably a full dome, and with Toffoli. They'll be up for it.

whatever fatigue, bumps and bruises Markstrom may have accumulated pre-covid, was likely mitigated by 20 days off during covid. Those 20 days resets the counter, at least partially, on how many games he can physically endure. Add in the 7 day all-star break, and I would say Marky is not as fatigued as one might figure for a goalie who has played 42 of 52 games.

I'm pretty sure they are using him to cement the PO spot and maybe even be sure of a high spot, and then give him a lot of time off.

I've stopped doubting Sutter when it comes to lineup decisions and who starts in net.

Not only because he's a better coach than me (shocker, I know), but he also knows more in terms of how the players are feeling and how to deploy them.

For all we know, Sutter has been getting Markstrom to rest more practice so he can focus on games (apparently he's quite the workhorse). So I'm not concerned -- Sutter gets the benefit of any doubt for me.

Most of the Flames losses they were by far the better team anyway...some of those stats about quality of opponent are kinda random.

Both SJ game for example

If anything, I think it's more likely that Markstrom's body is too scared of giving out just purely out of fear of Sutter rather than Sutter not knowing what he's doing riding Markstrom heavily.

He probably gets the least amount of shots per game in the league. They were discussing that last game and I think it’s a valid point. Should keep his wear and tear down.

I would like to see Markstrom get some nights off, but trying to see Sutter's point of view, Markstrom is playing really well, so it makes sense to ride him while he is. Plus, if you can build some separation in the standings, then you can rest him towards the end of the year without concern.

Sutter rode Kipper and Quick when he coached those teams and his goalies delivered .

Kipper won 39 to 45 games in those years which is just incredible in my mind ....so he's gonna ride Markstrom hard until either Sig or Barbs tells him it's time to be starting Vladar and I trust these guys.
I'm also pretty happy with our backups throughout this organization as I don't remember a time when we had all good goalies In the system.

Markstrom has played 6 more minutes than Vasilevsky for example and they have very similar shots on goal per game.

Probably stating the obvious but the fear of Markstrom playing so much is that he's been injured in previous years and will hide or downplay injuries to keep playing. Feels riskier than playing Vasilevsky more or even guys like Quick & Kipper from years ago

Markstrom doesn't really police himself so you rely on the coach making that call for him and we have one who won't necessarily do that.

Also, as its MSL first trip to the Dome as coach (and Sportsnet loves the Flames so much), I sure hope we aren't treated to numerous replays of Game 6 OT or him hoisting the Cup
