The amount owing in taxes is equivalent to the salary of a 3rd line forward so I don't understand why they just don't pay the bills. Pretty embarrassing for the league.

This is why Phoenix still has a team:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...vision_markets
Putting a franchise into as many of the top-20 cities on that list as possible is the overriding strategic goal of the NHL. It’s why the league would want to see a team in Houston, Kansas City, or even Portland before Quebec City.

These American cities all have greater economic outputs than Quebec city:
Greenville
Harrisburg
Durham
Columbia
Allentown
Dayton
Knoxville
Des Moines
Albuquerque
Syracuse
Little Rock
Greensboro
Tucson
Madison
Worcester
Fresno
Bakersfield
And hundreds more. You get my point.
Houston's GDP is over 15 times that of Quebec City's.

I get that may well be how Bettman views things as he's always seemed hyper focused on American national TV deals and sees it as his crowning achievement. The reality though is that the American national TV deals are only about 12-13% of overall revenue and having a team in Arizona is not moving the needle. The days of being able to monetize a large media market who doesn't watch the games are over. A small market with 500,000 hockey fans now has a lot more revenue potential than a 2 million household market with 10,000 hockey fans.
Also, the Coyotes local TV deal with Bally is on life support and will likely disappear as a source of significant revenue in the next 2-3 years.

Even if it's human error, this group needs to get it's #$% together - this is embarrassing to the fans, players, staff and the league.

I guarantee you money isn't the issue..
they just need to stop running the team like a Casino and like a bunch of mobsters.
They probably tasked Alex Meruelo Jr with paying the bill and he was busy watching Youtube all day.

Gotcha. So if I'm the one asking for money from the Coyotes I have someone else start my car.

My favourite is that if they don't pay the bills, they're going to lock out the administration people... you know, the ones who can pay the bills. Why is everyone so stupid?

It's obvious there is a seriously strained relationship with the local government, as evidenced by previous news releases threatening to kick them out of the arena. So this is no clerical oversight.
But withholding taxes to the government generally isn't an effective way of expressing your disagreement.
I honestly don't know why Tempe would want to deal with these guys. How badly do you want to build an arena for them? If this kills the potential new arena deal, then this team truly is toast and Bettman will be talking to the Fertitta's of the world.

They are doing it right in a way that you can do if you are playing in an area you don't plan to play in long term. Most teams have to keep their fans somewhat invested.

To enter a market, you need to be able to capture casual fans, including the dreaded corporate disinterested fan.
Can you imagine meeting a sales guy for a game that is in some far flung suburb nowhere near your place of work or home?
They eliminated a ton of potential casual fans by making the arena in a place that is a pain in the ass to get to to for 3/4 of the population.
I go to a lot of Flames games, and grew up a hockey fan. If they played in Seton, that number would drop dramatically because of logistics.

This argument would be more persuasive if there wasn't a football stadium like 2 feet away that seems to have no issue attracting fans.

A football stadium attracting fans 8-10 times a year only on weekends, is a lot different than attracting fans 41 times a year on mostly weeknights

There's a significant difference between a team that plays 8 home games per season, with the majority being on Sunday afternoon, and one that plays 41 home games, with a significant percentage being played on weeknight evenings.
This season, after two home games, the Coyotes had played as many weeknight evening home games as the Cardinals will all season.

All due respect, you don't understand the geography and demographics of this Metro..
The Coyotes held an open practice 2 mins from my house in Gilbert last weekend and it was absolutely packed for the 32nd place team in the league. Hold that in Peoria and there would be 20 people

They've probably been working from home from Covid anyway. The only people that really need the rink is the players and equipment managers.
