Every single Flames D man this year has played better than Gio did his final 2 years here.

Haha...wow.

The Flames have been at or near the top of the league in chances from transition. Your hate for large defensemen isn't holding any water here.

He literally was playing with this team and coach last season. The same coach that came in and anointed him #1 both verbally and on the ice. Nobody in Flames management wanted him gone. Don Maloney just said as much the other day.
Gio actually suits Darryl’s system more so than he ever did Geoff system. Ward’s system was way too taxing on the defense and Gio’s mobility. Under Sutter though, his game flourished and it was part of the the turn around last season.
People here think the turnaround started this season. But I disagree, I think this team turned a corner late last season. They just ran out of time in a shortened season. Gio was a big part of that.
All I know is, if I’m Darryl. I’d be a little nervous about the likes of Valimaki, Kylington, Hanifin and Zadorov on my left side. Not to say they’re bad or anything, but they’re all pretty young and/or inexperienced and we all know how much Darryo Sutter cares about veteran leadership and experience.

1) The Flames are currently 1st overall defensively - bringing a 38 year old Gio back to re-make him our #1 defenseman is flat out stupid. And bringing him back to be the #5 doesn't make sense due to the cost (point 2).
2) The cap doesn't work at all. So Seattle would have to retain 50%, or close to it. They aren't trading their captain, at 50% retained, unless they get PAID.
3) HE WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR FREE IN THE SUMMER.

Sutter: "There's unfinished business". Looks like he means business this year. Might as well do it with Gio and Iggy in - all hands on deck. Let's do it! Even if Iggy sits up there with management and injected into the last game, why not? Sign him for $1 on the contract with bonuses in the playoffs. Gio as a depth D-man - win-win situation IMO. Realistically, Iggy will not come out of retirement. With Gio, it's definitely doable and he doesn't need to be a first or second line pairing unless he earns it or proves that he still can be the quarterback.

Cap hit.

Disrupting what they have.
All decent reasons.
Giordano's wheels have come off, not so much.

Yes to bringing him back, as a UFA if he wants to take a team friendly discount.

Is that when Zadorov is on the ice?

Doesn't this depend on how the Flames are doing at the deadline, and Gaudreau's contract status? If the Flames are near the top of the league, Gaudreau hasn't been extended, and you think Gio is the best option to improve the team, I think you have to consider spending assets to get him while you still have a guaranteed Gaudreau.

Sure it is. Giordano really struggled the tail end of 2019 and then 2020 as the games got quicker and more intense. Last year he was a liability for much of the year because he was playing way too high in the lineup. This year has not been kind to the captain either. He's a few steps behind where he was when he last played the game at the level people love to reminisce over. Can he still play in the NHL? Sure. Can he still play on a team that could go deep into the post season and not hurt the team? That is open for debate, but I would not want him out there in anything but a bottom pair supporting role, and even that is not something I would be comfortable with.

I’m over the idea of bringing Gio back for anything more than a 3rd, but he’s clearly a better option for team with aspirations of a Deep playoff run than ZaNorris or Valimaki.

Former Flames prospect Radek Duda is still an active player. Maybe he has unfinished business and we can bring him back.

That has to be the lamest things someone can say if they have an opinion that flies in the face of pretty much any stat you can look up.
|
Sure. how about this stat? ZERO Playoff series wins and constant complaints of his captained teams performing below expectations. Even by you. Or is it 100% on our crappy coaches and the Captain of our team gets 0 blame?
Name one dman this year on the Flames who hasn't played better than Gio did the past 2 years? Maybe Stone because he hasn't played much? but the other 7 guys have passed Giold by.
Which is not his fault. He is old and has sacrificed his body all those previous years for us and now he is just broken. The wheels have not only come off but the spares have flats in them.

I don't know if Gio has much gas left in the tank beyond this season. I personally would rather the organization move on as things have gone very well without him. Not saying that this seasons success has anything to do with him not being on the team but it can't be ignored that even in his good years he always struggled in the playoffs. Just not worth giving up assets at the deadline IMO unless the team has injury issues on the back end.
