I think Lindholm, but I'm also not totally convinced Seattle take Gio
I agree. That fishing photo with Lindholm and Markstrom leads me to believe this. That lead to signing Markstrom, which lead to signing Tanev. If it's anyone we are building a team up front around, it's Lindholm.
Tanev gets my vote.
He was referred to as pops in Vancouver for a reason. Then came here and blew the doors off of everyone's expectations.
Dudes a leader and it shows . He's not flashy , he doesn't make too many brain facts, seems cool calm and collected.
And if NOT Tanev .....no captain.? I'd love to see Eat bread simply because he plays ALL out and we need leaders on this team .....but it'll never happen.
If Gio goes to Seattle I would talk to Tkachuk after the dust settles about an extension and potentially table a 8 year 72M deal with the C as part of the deal. If he turns it down then I am going with no captain for next year and re-evaluate in a years time. Could be full blown rebuild at that time or a new face of the franchise brought in
Always earned. Never given.
If any player that needs to have a letter promised to stay here then I don't want them.
Its hard to know who has leadership abilities without ever being in the room.
Signs point toward Monahan and Tkachuk having leadership quality, so it's likely one of those two if Tkachuk commits to Calgary.
Despite Backlund having an A all these years, I don't think you should make him the Captain as he is beginning his decline and that isn't good for leading the team when it counts IMO.
Location: F*** me. We're so f***ing good, you check the f***ing standings? Lets f***ing go! F***ing practice!
Exp:
After reading about Backlund as captain of the Swedes and all the accolades thrown his way after that tournament win by coaching staff and his teammates, as well as tenure and vet status he would be my pick. He has also had a couple of great leaders in Iginla and Giordano to emulate.
Tkachuk is another good choice if he really is staying.
I wouldnt choose Lucic or Tanev, not enough time in the organization and I look at them as soldiers on the team. Dont see the reason to burden them w the C.
One only has to talk to Monahan for 5 minutes to realize why he isn't captain material.
Mangiapaine hasn't had enough time in the league, doesn't make sense to slap the C on him now.
Not sure if the players would take a vote or Sutter picks his man.
I could also understand reasoning to have 4 A's instead of the C.

Fair enough. I am just looking at the reality that a place like Calgary may need to incentivize talent to stay here. I certainly wouldn’t want Tkachuk getting the C without a long term commitment but if he is here long term I still have him as the best choice to succeed Gio

I've never talked to him. What did he say during your conversation with him that led you to this conclusion? He was Captain of his junior team and has wore an A his entire NHL career. Curious.

Do you ever watch his interviews? I imagine his pep talks to go " hey uh guys we aren't playing good enough okay, I mean yeah like be better. I mean, we need to come out with a better start, I mean yeah k".

If these players are anything like their tv interviews they are all the most boring, vanilla, human beings on the planet. I suspect that is not even close to being true though.

Have you ever seen interviews with half the players in the league including g captains? And frankly, Monahan’s interviews are as good as most.
Media interviews to get an idea who a person is? Yeah, that’s the way to do it… people always speak freely how they would behind closed doors to cameras and microphones.
I finally found a really good interview I liked with Backlund and Lindholm. It is in Swedish, with English subtitles. They both strike me as awesome human beings though, but not sure if that's enough to be a captain.
I just mentioned it before and thought, it's a pretty good watch.

Did you watch Curtis Lazar interviews? Coherent, thoughtful, and insightful.

Interviews amount to a whole lot of nothing.
I agree with you there. Most good interviews are a product of a good PR team, and scripted content. In fact, I believe most questions asked in 1 on 1 interviews are ran by the player first.
Lol interviews amount to nothing? Well when you're the team captain you're going to get a lot of screen time and faced with answering some tough questions. Every captain in the league seems pretty well spoken in the league currently.
I really think there are a lot of intangibles that go into a great captain… especially in the modern NHL. And there is no one set rule but I think a big quality has to be a captain with credibility on the ice and the dressing room. There are no perfect players but if the captain is going to try to lead by example or by being vocal with his teammates, I think he has to be able to back it up on the ice.
That’s why having a guy that’s defensively responsible is a safe pick for captain. My concern with guys like Tkachuk and lucic is that - at least last year - they seemed to be the guys who would have the most costly giveaways in the defensive end. I thinks it’s hard for players to follow behind a guy who’s telling everyone “play smart” or “buckle down” or “simple plays” etc. when they make a brutal giveaway themselves at the blue line and it ends up at the back of of the net. That happened too often with them. It not that I don’t like them as players… it’s just I don’t think they would be the best choice as a captain.
I think Tanev is the best choice. He may not wow anyone or be the guy to score a big goal in a game but when he speaks up and encourages the guys to play Sutter hockey, you can bet that he’ll back it up with his play on the ice.
