Gio with one year left simply has to be very attractive to Seattle. A lot of the big money players have term left.
Looking at it from Seattle’s perspective, the next player available from the Flames is a huge drop off so I’d want more than a second to skip Gio.
To me the only deal that could make sense of is there is someone from the protected list they would like more and willing to give up draft capital for.
Gio and a 3rd for Backlund?

IMO the best players from each team that are left open are Dmen. Seattle has to pick 14 forwards and 3 goalies. So they only can pick 9 D. So the question is whether Gio is in the top 9 on their list.

Doubt that, as Ryan is a UFA, so just a wasted pick.
Doubt they take on Price, just way too much term and AAV.
Landeskog is a UFA, again a wasted pick.
Gio is the best and least risky of the high cap guys.

They could take Ryan and Landeskog - just not in the draft. Vegas didn’t have to do that with Engelland - they just did because they wanted him early (and there wasn’t any decent Calgary pick anyway).

I've lost hope that there is much chance they don't take Giordano. With so many teams making moves to protect their defensemen, the pool isn't nearly as deep and Calgary doesn't have anything else close to his quality available. As Cliff said, they are concerned about maintaining cap space and taking his contract for one year is pretty perfect. Can be flipped at the deadline for assets or he might be able to lead them as captain to the playoffs. Looks to me like he's gone.

For one second, I thought you meant Eric Francis.
Good veteran leadership is something money can't buy. He was in a few all star games, well respected. A positive locker room presence. He could be a middle or bottom pair when things said and done.
PK is more like a distraction.

I don't know, people seem to overpay for this all the time.
Probably half the bad contracts in the league were signed for intangibles.

I think the Flames protected the right group. Interesting thing will be to see if any of the protected list gets traded once the expansion draft is finished.
Should be a very interesting summer.

Don't think he gets picked. Better places to spend money IMO. I'd rather take RyJo at $8M than Giordano at $6.75M.

Ryan Johansen has a lot of negative trade value. 4 years left at 8 mill. Can hardly maintain the half point per game pace.
Gio has positive value and could get a nice return at the deadline. Seattle then gets cap flexibility for every year after that.
Now if Nashville had made a deal to retain 25% of his cap, then maybe.

I would think, they do the opposite, they take Giordano and not select Ryan Johansen. Worst case the flip Giordano or move him at the trade deadline for another asset.
Johansen still has 4 years at 8m per season, but offensively he has struggled last 2 years.

Anybody that doesnt think Gio will get picked is nuts.
They will snap him up, slap the C on him and get a great leader and player on their new team.
Everybody loves and respects Giordano. I think he still has some good solid years ahead of him. I wont be surprised when they give him another contract.
He will be missed here, that's a big hole to fill.

Agreed. I struggle to see how this team will be better without Giordano next year. Treliving certainly has a lot of work to do.

I disagree. Seattle does have to build a team that the locals will follow. They need some star power and good players to make the team competitive and then develop a following. Everyone that goes to Nashville sees their numbers drop off, so I'm not sure that would scare me off. Bottom line is they are getting a big number one center with term and a player they can count on. Better to take a gamble on that than plan for the 2nd round pick you're going to get at the TDL. That 2nd round pick is likely five years out from when they select him, and then hopefully turns into a player the level that Johansen currently is. I'd take Johansen because its a sure thing. Giordano recouping anything at the deadline is a complete unknown. that is an egg that may never get laid let alone hatch.

RyJo is terrible and you want that contract for 4 more years.
He’s one of the main reasons why Nashville needs to rebuild.
