Statement from Kathryn Tappen on Jeremy Roenick:

Didn't she listen to the whole interview? What he said was respectful.

If that offended her why doesn't she just limit what she listens to?

Does she even care how this might affect anecdotes on Spittin' Chiclets?!

Etc.

I just think it's interesting JR got suspended for this, but not for the time he faked a murder to prank some teammates in San Jose.

FYP. Not sure anyone's telling anyone how they should feel...we're all just sharing our perspectives & opinions.

It's a great question...I don't think being 'offended' or not is really the crux of the issue. IMO it's more about recognizing how much different people's life experience varies based on silly little things like skin colour and gender.

We tend to view these incidents in a vaccuum - like it's the only occurrence. I think this is especially true when we try to put ourselves in the 'victim's' (for lack of a better word in this case) shoes. Most of us can imagine how it would suck to be objectified like this; what is much harder to imagine is having similar interactions/experiences dozens of times a day, every. single. day. (not always as public/brash as this particular incident, but also not always as 'light-hearted' or coming from a friend).

I'm not sure how much we need to know Tappen's personal feelings on this to be able to judge Roenick's words...I would bet her feelings could be summed up as follows: The fact that this is probably just another eyeroll worthy event in her life is a sad reflection on society as a whole.

That said, Roenick isn't being punished for our collective ignorance, only his own.

Which is fine. Seems like the way things like this should be dealt with.

Assuming there aren't any other incidents, JR should apologize to her, accept the suspension and that should be about it. It was a dumb joke gone bad.

She's also drawing a clear line between a personal and professional relationship. What it may be okay to joke and talk about privately as friends and among friends is different than what's acceptable to joke and talk about publicly.

Well with this there is no question now that he crossed the line with her as well as the people at NBC.

Having a personal and professional face is an awkward position for Roenick as it undermines his appeal as an authentic guy who speaks his mind and doesn't try to be discreet to avoid controversy.

Obviously he has had his hand slapped on this one, so it will be interesting to see if and how he changes post-suspension.

What? That was all JR, one chiclets guy went "woah, careful, coworker" After the story biz even made a point to ask and talk about how great she is

If you're as big of a fan of Roenick as you claim you know this is exactly the type of thing he says on his own, nobody else pressured him too

Yeah, they made multiple attempts to try and stop him.

"This is a family program"
"Careful, she's your co-worker"
"She's like a daughter to you"
(quotes not exact)

And then got him to pull a 180 when they asked him if she ever talks about how hard it is to be a woman in a male-dominated industry.

They kind of had that forced awkward laugh but they clearly knew he was crossing a line and threw him a couple lifesavers that he swam right by.

It was also apparent that Roenick came on simply to tell that story. No segway, no nothing, just "I"m Roenick and I have a hot coworker who I want to bang." Still can't believe people think that's acceptable, but then again we're a generation or two away from people thinking it was okay to slap a female colleague on the ass for a job well done.

I thought the co-hosts handled that pretty well and professionally all things considered.

Well considering the JR interview was pre-recorded a few weeks ago and then part of the editing process into the podcast, they could have simply edited out or excluded the JR interview altogether. This wasn’t a live interview so the chiclets crew had plenty of time after to decide it wasn’t appropriate and not air it.

She has said her part and he apologizes to her, and hope that they can continue to work together.

On a different note, I really wish Bennett could turn into a player like JR was.

Unless JR told them to take it out, I can't imagine why it would be the responsibility of Spittin Chiclets to remove it. It's no more disrespectful than the way Biz talks about women every episode.

The only differences are a) Roenick named the chick and b) she works for NBC.

Morality debate aside, Roenick is a ######bag. In this day and age when we all know better, he clearly cares more about pumping himself up than in being an adult.

Can you imagine Hrudey or Ball doing something like this. No you can’t. Because they’re classy professionals.

To me this is a comment you share with your buddies in a locker room.

Roenick has been in the media long enough to know that these comments would not fly under the radar - especially where we are at today.

Will be interesting to see if NBC fires him or eventually brings him back
