Also lets not underestimate the wizard. If any gm can sign Stone for a bit under what we expect, it'd be Tre. I also read from a few posters that Stone grew up cheering for the Flames, if that's true then that could help a little bit - as well as having his brother here.

There will be no money to fix goaltending if required, it will limit re-signing at least one current roster player, and it will almost assuredly mean trading at least one other roster F and at least one current dman.
It feels like fixing a problem that does not exist....and ignoring ones that might.

If Stone is brought in, Brodie and Frolik are both gone. Odds are both are gone after the 2019/2020 season anyways.
Ryan is also a possibility of a player that could be moved.

Is it really that hard to figure out if he wants to sign? Have his bro send a text?

|
So much this. Unless it is clear to everyone in the league that Neal wants out, trading him would kill this organization's credibility with every free agent. NMC's would become a mandatory ask for everyone.
Then again, not being able to sign big name UFA's wouldn't be the worst thing in the world (as it so rarely works out well), but I think it would drive the sub $2M guys to hesitate before doing business with BT.

It's not all that scary if you know you'll have Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk, Lindholm and Stone in your top 6 for the next three playoffs or more.
You're in better shape over the length of a potential Stone contract than you would with a couple 20 something picks. You'd be fortunate if they turned out to be anywhere near Stone's level.
|
5 wonderful names, but it's 4 wingers and a center (who isn't exactly a Selke candidate). Of course, three of the wingers are super strong two-way players, but not team in recent memory has won a cup being built from the outside-in.
Unless you trade Johnny or Chucky for Barkov, I don't like the composition of that core (despite loving each component as an individual).

What happens if Tkachuk is part of the package to get Stone?

That's the real question IMO

Ryan and Stone don't have value to Ottawa. Neal not trending positively now, Frolik a salary dump. Brodie may be available yes, I'd be surprised if Hamonic was...
Backlund though is intriguing, given his longer term deal. Stones defensive ability will help mitigate that loss, and if the Flames also could get Hayes to fill in a center role....

Backlund has a full NTC and loves it in Calgary. He isn't going to wave it to go anywhere IMO.

For next year
Frolik plus Brodie equal 9M.
So there's that I guess.
Need goaltending to be Rittich and someone in the org as there is nothing in the budget for a tender.
Not sure where that leaves Tkachuk

I would be floored if Tkachuk was part of that package. Not that Ottawa wouldn’t want him, but it makes no sense for Calgary to include him. Treliving would walk if that was the case.

Tre drafted Tkachuk. He's constantly praised for what he brings. He's possibly move valued to the Flames over Johnny.

A signed Mark Stone could be the single best Flames trade acquisition since Kiprusoff or even Iginla. It would be a complete game-changer. Stone is easily a top-10 winger in the NHL, in my opinion. To have two of them plus Tkachuk and Lindholm would be stupefying and incredibly exciting.

I'd say absolutely zero chance of that happening. Duchene trade probably set the bar... 1st 2 non nhl prospects and a conditional asset.
I bet because Stone is better the prospects would have to be better though.
I'm OK with it as long as it is only one of mangiapane or kylington and the second prospect is a junior/Euro/NCAA guy. For me Dube and Valimaki should be untouchable unless they are the whole deal.
This team is good enough to take a run at the cup. They'll need a lot of breaks but a signed Stone moves them into contender status for the next 3 or 4 years.

Let's be clear here: Elias Lindholm may play quite often on the wing, but he is absolutely a centre. Even when on the wing he plays like a centre.

It has to be Gillies...he is on a one way deal starting next year and there simply would be no room to sign another i dont think.

For the cap to work I think they need to keep Kylington and move Brodie in the summer in addition to Frolik and maybe Neal?

I could see Ottawa really wanting him. Also, if Tree’s talking about re-signing Stone, then I could see him including Tkachuk to also get Dzingle and avoid having to pay both Stone and Tkachuk next season.
I’m not saying I’d do it, personally. I’m just... I dunno...
