If Poirier hadn't lost himself (and two important development years) to addiction he'd probably be a top 6 forward for us right now and that trade would look a whole lot better.

He started in the AHL at 19 (turned 20 half way through IIRC) and had 21 goals / 46 points in his first 57 AHL games.

Too bad. Makes you wonder how many guys have their careers destroyed because of stuff like that but you just never hear about it.

Definitely! The potential may have been there. However, from an asset management standpoint it is important to evaluate trades at some point. Obviously, immediately following is unfair. This trade is now complete in its entirety from a Flames "asset" standpoint and the final autopsy shows a disaster. In fact looking at this draft, anything beyond the top 20 picks has been horrible.

For the comment prior to this by another poster, the fan base wanting Jaybo gone (myself included) is not an excuse for a manager making a bad trade.

But is it fair to hold a completely unforeseen and tragic outcome against Flames management?

It certainly is not fair to hold flames management accountable for a tragic circumstance. However, it is fair to say that by looking at the draft class, I think we overvalued what a 20+ pick was worth. We would have been better off taking a mediocre/high potential NHL asset (Nyquist, Tatar, Jake Allen) one for one than a mediocre package just because it included a first round pick.

Would sure like to see signing confirmations for our RFA's (probably keeping them under wrap hopefully until they are all done?)

Apart from Jankowski, Lindholm and Hanifin, I'm assuming most of these guys will just take the qualifiers.

Most of the ones that got 2 way deals will probably reject their QO and negotiate a 2 way deal where they take a less NHL salary for more AHL salary or guaranteed salary.

Plus, I'm not sure it's fair to judge the trade based on how the draft picks worked out.

I think this is more than fair to say for his first 3 seasons here under Brent Sutter, but in season 4 under Hartley Bouwmeester seemed to be flourishing again, and did NOT want him traded. I felt another year under Hartley at least and he would have raised his value considerably. Bouwmeester just needed a system that utilized his skating.
