Good (though I guess one spot opened up when Jankowski was called up and I suppose that might happen to scorers from other teams as well).

Anyone wonder if there is something bigger in the works here? He didn't 'need' to be waived as far as I can tell.

Mangiapane-Jankowski-Jagr 3rd line with Bennett to pressbox for a couple games perhaps?

Something definitely up with Glass to waivers.

Jagr and/or Hathaway in would be really nice.

Bennett to the 4th line as the centre or LW.

Someone may want Glass if he clears, as an option to call up.

Hathaway in would be my guess... Treliving loves Hathaway.

Default Glass on Waivers

Jankowski locked down the 3rd line C and Bennett permanently on the wing?

Which is a bit ironic as the one young player who excelled in camp was demoted to make room for Glass. However, it seems clear that Treliving and Gulutzan are correcting that mistake.

So one goal in 2015 gives him 2 years of credit to be well below average and take a spot away from someone better? This is Oiler mentality at its finest.

Well below average? Based on what?

He's been a fourth line center for the past three seasons and has basically been an even up player in terms of shot generation and scoring chances. That's above average for a fourth line player.

His salary is 1.5M high, but other than that the guy has been a great foot soldier and a huge presence in the room. He's lost a step for sure, but as recent as last season they were using him to "right" players games when they lost their way up the roster.

The Flames will move on, but I don't see a need to hammer the guy.

I don’t believe this was a mistake. As good a camp as Jankowski had, I think the experience for him of ripping the #### out of the AHL for two weeks was probably pretty valuable. He remains in Calgary and on the roster with an exclamation-point.

Not sure I call asset management a mistake. He belonged in the lineup, sure, and it was obvious even in penticton. But managing the business of hockey is just as important to the success of the club long term. Glass was always a depth signing, and putting him on waivers is BT just putting his house in order.

Exactly. Treliving is thinking and planning multiple steps ahead trying to predict the market and what other teams are doing. He isn't a GM in a vacuum, there are lots of moving parts. He has until the trade deadline to ice the what he believes is the best roster. If that means he has to play the shell game early in the season, than so be it. They are currently 2 points out from hosting a playoff game while admittedly not firing on a cylinders.

I think he can take a more patient approach because he has the confidence that the team can survive a few bumps along the way.

I think Glass is on waivers as a courtesy to a veteran player - Instead of keeping him in the press box, see if they can find him work elsewhere. May not mean anything; but if he clears it gives the team future optionality.

Why do you think that was valuable? I don’t see the need to defend it. Not a big deal in the larger scheme but Treliving’s rationale of needing to do something with the roster made little sense then or now IMO.

It depends on what you mean by "something bigger".

It's most-likely one of three things...
  1. They've decided to send Glass down to the AHL instead of Hamilton when Jagr is ready to return.

  2. They're going to send down both Glass and Hamilton and recall either Hathaway or Mangiapane (I'd guess Hathaway).

  3. Glass wants to go somewhere that he'll get a chance to play more often and the Flames are trying to accommodate him by exposing him on waivers. They may have a trade deal in place where the acquiring team wishes for him to have cleared waivers first so that they have some flexibility with him. Or, they might just be hoping that a team will take him for free.

It's unlikely to be anything "bigger" than one of those three things.

I think this is the last season for Stajan with the Flames but right now his most valuable contribution is on the PK and so far none of the young guys have been able to replace that.

Can't imagine that Glass doesn't clear waivers. Hope he stays in the system, we might be able to use him in the playoffs.

It'd be nice if the Flames kept one spot open for guys who can pass through waivers, that way they could cycle guys from and to Stockton throughout the year. It could be a way of rewarding guys for good play and expose them to the NHL game. they've kind of handcuffed themselves with a bunch of older signings of guys with little to no future to the long term success of the team.
