Shultz is a comparable and he signed for quite a bit less.

Wow that is a big cap hit for a player that didn't impress in the playoffs. The Rangers are paying 1st pairing money to a 2nd pairing defenceman. Vlasic only got an extra $350k.

Seeing the money thrown around at defenceman today just makes Treliving look like more of a wizard for the Hamonic trade and Stone signing.

I womder if his work in Washington (small sample relative to his career thus far) had any impact one way or the other on the term or money of this contract?

Edit - after I posted this I read an article that suggested Kirk took a hometown discount and could have got more money and more term elsewhere

Everyone needs not remember how much the cap has increased when looking at these contracts. Paying Shattenkirk 6.5 m in 2017 is probably better than paying Hamrlik the 3.5 or 4m or whatever we gave him in 2005.

I am mind blown about the fact that there are some people who actually think this is a fair deal for this player. No way is Shattenkirk worth anything close to $7 mil AAV.

This is a sizeable overpayment.

Yes, clearly I'm too sure of my views of particular players, as if they can't possibly be subject to reasonable disagreement. And clearly, no one else does anything like this when talking about players or signings, which is why I deserve the particular malice directed at me. I mean it's not like I could easily find an example of someone presenting their opinion with complete confidence and suggesting that everyone who disagrees with their view is obviously wrong.
