Do you consider 2016-17 to be a successful season for the Flames?

Getting good young guys on ELC:s to on the bottom lines and 3rd pairing is really important in the cap world though.

Besides, there's no telling how good our D prospects are going to be.

If the Flames lose to the Ducks then I don't see how you can consider it a successful season. They've lost in the first round too many times over the last 11 years to be able to get any kind of moral victory out of yet another one

It's simple really, you need to have the right perspective.

Whatever happened before 4 years ago has absolutely nothing to do with the current roster or the status of our current rebuild.

All those first round exits are extremely disappointing as a fan, but this team tore it down 4 years ago and did a full on rebuild. We had one lucky season in the second year of that rebuild, which netted us a 2nd round playoff series, then took a step back because that lucky season wasn't sustainable.

Now we've changed the coach, added some new young pieces and have seen good progress towards becoming a perennial threat. Back in the playoffs, but not because we were unsustainably lucky, but rather because we have taken huge strides in being a possession team and increased the talent on the roster by leaps and bounds.

A loss in this series to the Ducks will definitely be disappointing, but as long as they take this season and build off of it going forward I will be happy.

Average teams make the playoffs ... To me, being average does not equate to successful in pro sports.

Advancing to the second round begins to define successful.... and gets more and more successful with each win after that.

You're really reaching there. I think you need to officially count the rebuild post Iginla era once a new core stepped in.

Drafting 6th overall last year to being a playoff team this year, and arguably a better playoff team than what we iced in 2015, I think it's successful.

Progression is key.

I would say one of the most important findings we've had this season is just how important the slotting position of the 1st line RW and the #4 defenseman is on this team. The chemistry with Ferland has been a breath of fresh air and the addition of Stone and subtraction of Wideman was one of the biggest adjustments this team made. I think we now know which positions we need to address going forward to make this an elite team.

PP went from 22nd to 10th
PK went from 30th to 12th
Gained 17 points in the standings
Went from 26th place to 15th
Went from missing the playoffs to making them
Went from 30th in GAA to 14th

Plus we improved by leaps and bounds when it comes to advanced stats and possession stats.

All that after a horrible 5-10-1 start that saw us in last place in many of the above categories after 1/5th of the season was already complete, which means the team was way above average for the last 4/5th of the season.

I guess some people just see what they wanna see. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I do consider it somewhat successful. Big changes with a new coaching staff took time to adjust. They did so nicely in the second half. They are pretty well set up for success into the future assuming good players perform as they can reasonably be expected to.

If the Flames lose in the first round it's a minor success. If they get into the 2nd round it's a definite success. Going into the season I gave the Flames a 50/50 chance of making the playoffs.

However, depending on how this series end will have a large impact on where on the scale it sits!

Put me on the side of it depends on the playoffs. The strides made in the season are great but the core has to show the ability to raise their level of play in the playoffs when things get tough. Win or lose I need to see more from Gaudreau from here on out to prove he's a star caliber player that can elevate his game in the playoffs and produce 5 on 5 in the midst of being the number 1 focus of the other team.

Yes, they recovered from a terrible start and finished in the 95-100 point range I was hoping for. I'm bummed that Bennett had a sophomore slump. Wideman, Brouwer and Bouma did not really earn their contracts when they were playing. GG won me over.

Good season, I want BT to re-sign for 5 years.

I'll be expecting more next year though.

If I were a Flames fan, I would no doubt consider this to be a successful season.

Unlike in 2015, the Flames of this year are a very good hockey club. Not a pretender riding sky-high PDO to offset bottom-5 possession and shot differential numbers.

The future looks bright with Monahan, Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Bennett, Brodie, Hamilton still entering their prime years. Hopefully my Canucks can compete with the Flames and Oilers for the division in a couple years.

The goal of any season is to make the playoffs. They accomplished that so success. You could argue about individual player success but team wise goal achieved. Second goal would be winning in the playoffs / that one is not looking so good so far.

Team wise I would say a success / individual players a mixed bag / playoffs they could sure use at least slaying the curse!

Well after that #### show I can't see how anyone can come away feeling positive about this season. As soon as the winning streak ended the Flames went back to playing like a non-playoff team, and have absolutely embarassed themselves against the Ducks
