That's what we do here too. At Japanese 100 yen shops ($1 stores) they sell these things, a preset pack of 10 aluminum rings which fit gas burners is 100 yen per pack. love'em.
That's the thing, gas is so common here in Japan and what we have been using for 5 years. But it's always already been included where we have been living, not something where it was like "it costs $1100 more to have it", so hence why debating about whether we should just stick with what we're used to and buck up the extra money or change our cooking style to a higher end electric range with induction which a lot have people in this thread have endorsed while saving a little money in the process.
I can also note that our home is going to include a chimney hoodfan over the range.

OK after much deliberation, we have decided to go with: GAS
Samsung NX58H5600SS
http://www.coastappliances.com/produ...el-NX58H5600SS
At first turned off by 'Samsung', would not want my range to blow up in my wife's face but then again it's not a washer or a smartphone so we're probably OK.

My issue with the design you picked is that a lot of the controls are at the back. This means reaching over flaming burners if you are doing multiple things, which I wouldn't want to do.

Ah, very interesting point! I suppose we would use the oven and stove tops at the same time sometimes.

On that note, do you have any model you would recommend that has a work-around on this issue?

No, because mine is 20 years old, but it's a Maytag and still going strong. But this is the design style with controls up front:

I had to add more backsplash tiles in my kitchen because the splash n'dash flipper only did down to the old oven console height, but it was worth it.

I have a gas range with the controls in the same layout, never had a problem with it, mostly because the oven controls are on the back and I don't think I've ever not had the oven on hours earlier than the burners.
My critique of my own range is that the Black ceramic surface on mine doesn't like the higher heat and in a few small areas have tarnished or bubbled a bit, ditto an area on the back below the oven controls has discoloured due to heat, I'm running a foster home though that puts my equipment through more abuse than most.

Yeah, I have the controls at the back as well. You don't even get pleasantly warm reaching for them with the burner on. The location of human shoulders means your arm is pretty high above everything.

Ah, I see ok that makes perfect sense.
About a +$1000 variance on the one I found, so I will probably just go ahead and burn my arms from time to time, lol.
It'll be too late to determine this later, but my expectation is that we probably won't be using the stop tops and the oven simultaneously (too often), and even in those cases when we are, even less likely to be using all 5 burners at the same time along with the oven (IE reach over the burners not being used to use the oven controls).

Probably too late with this, but when I was asking a couple years ago, Ducay suggested the Blue Star gas range from Costco. We went with the 6 burner and just love it. It is easy enough to clean, looks great and works great. The only drawback is that the gas oven takes some time to preheat. However, it delivers even heat with more moisture than the electric, so it doesn't dry out whatever you are baking, whether banana bread or trout. Add that it is about 1/3 of the price of Wolf and backed by Costco...

And I'm a pretty tall guy (198cm) so I normally have to worry more about hitting my head on the hood fan more than burning my arms when cooking over the gas range here.

Certainly not too late, thanks for the input!
If it's something Costco offers that Coast has too I can look into it. My builder (Trico) works exclusively with Coast Appliances so it has to be something they have, but they do price match so that may work well with something priced by Costco.

Tell your builder you don't need him to provide the appliances, then get what you want from where you want, seriously if a builder told me that I could only buy from his supplier I'd tell him to sod off

With our little ones always fiddling, we went with the Samsung Chef Induction range.
This is by far the best range I've ever cooked on. Not sure if I'll ever go back to gas...

It's pretty much incredible. I like the idea of gas and I debated it. Frankly when I read comments in this thread about "just putting some foil around the burners" or whatever, it sounds terrible. Sure the instant heat is great, but induction does that as well, or at least the difference would be so small that I don't know if I would notice it.

I've cooked with induction before and it's a lot easier to keep clean as you go. I find it's a little more difficult to cook with though.

We do this exact same thing with our Bosch gas. The grates go well in the dishwasher, and then barkeepers friend for the stainless and its good to go

I have a jenn aire in simialr design to the samsung with controls up front. Had it for 10 years with only one time I had to call repair and it was for replacing broken dials from the cleaning lady.
Got to chat with him as he services a lot of different higer end ranges. He said jenn aire is pretty rock solid stuff. Especially the gas ranges. Says that was his first call in a very long time to do any type of fix.
Would recommend that brand for sure. As for Wolf and Viking we use it on vacation quite a bit as the condos we stay at have them. Not sure if we use the low end models but I am super unimpressed with those brands. Maybe higher end models are better, but I find them great to look at but terrible to cook on.
If anyone is looking for a between mainstream and high end I would say Jenn Aire is great. Ya it is kind of like Lexus, Maytag parts with slicker finish, but hey It works looks good and funtions great.

The only thing is that the builder gets wholesale rates that seem to be less than what I can get for the same appliances myself. Despite being limited to one supplier there are still several options to consider. Would probably have more options getting the appliances myself but at least there's some benefit to using the builder.
