29. Rarely drink. A beer here and there, some scotch once in a while. Maybe one day every 2-3 weeks.

33, I average about a drink a day. Usually I'll have a beer while I make dinner, finish it while getting the kids to bed. Most of the time I forget it and it's warm and gross by the time I'm back to it.
Occasionally I'll have a couple of scotches and a cigar, or I'll make an Old Fashioned. But max is maybe 2-3 drinks in a given night.
I've been able to find my limit without feeling overly gross on most occasions.

Just read the article. It doesn't talk about old man hangovers though. I mean my hangovers in my 30s are so much worse than the ones from my 20s. I can't imagine they would get better in my 60s. I don't think my body is built for alcoholism.

33; very light drinker. Really the only time I'll drink is if I am out with people (bars/lounges/clubs) or on vacation. Other than that, zero interest in alcohol... even just a casual beer with a dinner does not sound appealing to me on any level.
On the other hand, if I know my friends and I will be out in a nightlife type situation, a few cocktails while enjoying a social atmosphere and music sounds very good to me. I will say, I make a conscious effort to pace myself... or eat/drink water, because my tolerance is not what it used to be. I went to a big party school in the U.S. and spent lots of my 20's traveling, so I was not averse to being out and partaking. But I was never addicted to booze and it was easy to shut that off. I did not have any urge to keep drinking like other folks who become legitimately addicted and dependent.
The old-man hangover is real though, haha. Definitely looking at things on the other side of 30, takes a bit more time to recover than in my 20's (duh, I guess). A lot of my parents friends hit the sauce pretty hard, people in their 50's and 60's, which always does strike me as interesting, because those hangovers must be crippling.

As you get older you need to drink smarter.
I still enjoy beer/scotch/wine, but if buddies and I get together our drink of choice is vodka water.
Grey Goose & Water.....good.

But... why? Even leaving aside the fact that Grey Goose is complete garbage vodka, why do you think this is a good plan?
This strategy seems aimed at being able to drink alcohol while ensuring it tastes as little like alcohol as possible and is less likely to give you a hangover. At that point, you're just drinking to be drunk.

I'm 34 and and very fond of the drink. I've never touched the stuff during the week, but i'm what you would call a weekend warrior. I'm really starting to slow down though. I now get 2 days hangovers, and it's not worth being out of commission for two days (not to say I still don't do it from time to time).
If I drink now, it will be Friday night because that gives me Saturday to be miserable and Sunday to be at least functional. I would imagine as we start to have kids I will quit altogether. I can't see being hungover and dealing with children. Christ when I'm hung over at my friend's house and his one year old starts pulling on my face and hair, it's more than I can handle for 30 minutes let alone 24/7.

With the Jays this week and an event last night, I average about 5-6 pints per day with some shots of Jameson sprinkled in.

Age 31. When I drink, it might be one or two nights out of the month at the bar/pub, and I'll have two or three scotch, gin, or rye. I don't do beer. Sometimes one of those nights is a dinner, and I'll have a glass of wine. But it is rare for me to drink for any more than two nights in a given thirty-day period.
Let me take it one step further: I go for very long stretches when I don't and won't have a drop of liquor to drink. I'll flatly turn it down. Right now is one of those stretches. I'm six weeks into a cut for a Mexico trip right now, alcohol would be detrimental to that, so I'm happy to omit it in any quantity.
Consider that I have a small but respectable scotch collection (used as book-ends for a collection of science and horology books), and this all probably sounds like quite a weird mismatch. That's just me.
As for hangovers, it depends what I drank as to whether or not I'm going to hurt the next day. A Modafinil first thing in the morning usually takes care of any mental cloudiness.

I get the impression that most heavy drinking by retirees is day drinking. Lots of time to ease out of a hangover when you go to bed at 8 pm and have nothing to do the next day except watch curling and read terrible jokes emailed by your pals.

I think it's also a bit more part of the culture for old people. I know it is for young people as well but my grandma always had happy hour every day with the other old ladies on the block. Bridge, golf, etc., all seem to come with the expectation that you drink while playing.

I bet I crush 6-8 drafts at the Flames game on Saturday. Sunday will not be a productive day.

If a pint is 500 ml, that is 3 L of beer a day or close to 10 bottles. That would ruin me. 10 drinks, and your blood alcohol is .21 for a man of 180 lbs. Death is possible at .27.

I was going to say, I exclusively drink to get drunk.
Some beers and cocktails are genuinely tasty but none are so tasty that I'd drink 3 or 4 of them if they were non-alcoholic. There are plenty better tasting beverage choices that don't result in hangovers. Only reason I tolerate it all is cause being buzzed or drunk is fun.

I like to have two stiff rye & cokes every Friday and Saturday evening and I rarely drink to get drunk anymore but I can drink a lot. However these days I get proportionally ill the next day to the amount I drank the night before.

Sunday is for sitting on the couch, crushing drinks, and watching football anyways. Plus, I have Monday off.
