Ortio qualifying offer would have be around $675,000 and I doubt he has much of a case for a big contract in arbitration. Makes me think he's not coming back.
Re-sign Colborne to 2 years at max $2 million per year.
Just let Jooris go. No need for him.

I guess we can expect the Flames to sign a UFA goalie on July 1st.
|
I'd wager that has something to do with his QO being a 1-way deal as much as it is about looking elsewhere.

would have been a 1-way though.

Chiasson had absolutely nothing to do with it, you don't dump a 44 point player for a 14 point player. You really need to give up this work of fiction

Re: Colborne
He's one of the worst possession players on the Flames, hands down.
His biggest asset is 2-3 different moves in the shootout. Beyond that he isn't an overly effective hockey player.

Surprised by Agostino and Arnold. I thought they were getting better. However, I think this past season in Stockton was a big disappointment for management.
Perhaps Mangiapane made Agostino expendable, but that doesn't explain Arnold..
However, this could be a big kick in the @$$ to Poirier and Klimchuk as well as some others.
Get it going boys or you'll be gone. No more passengers.

Salary Arbitration is a big deal.
Teams won't be able to walk away from any arbitration where the player is awarded less than $3,906,595 per year.
Extremely bad for a team that can't afford to overpay depth players.

His QO might have been $660 but Ortio had an opportunity to get a huge raise in arbitration. If you look at contract comparables at his age / games played etc you're potentially talking 1.5 to 2.5 million. Don't forget what kind of money Martin Jones got as an RFA last year, that kind of money for what prior to this year was not much of a resume.

I doubt the Flames see Colborne as a 44 point player. Not everybody is fooled by his unsustainable hot streak to end the year.

I think Jooris is a fine 13th forward given his ability to play multiple positions and speed, but he'd have to take a 13th forward wage which is probably close to league minimum (575K)
I get the tactic but Colborne has to get signed, that's a real game of chicken move, his agent has to know someone will give him at least 2.5 mil on the market as a UFA.

I think it's as much to do with House cleaning, arbitration, etc... as it does with Johnny, Mony, and a potential upgrade UFA RWer

If the Flames lose Colborne, they essentially lose out on a 4th round pick. No big loss unless you consider the Brodie and Gaudreau factors. Even then.

Can I assume that all of these unqualified RFA's can now be "courted" as UFA's?

quite surprised about not qualifying Arnold and Agostino in particular..even Shore.
I don't think they had any real NHL aspirations, but we need to fill out the roster in Stockton. We will just have to replace them with similar players wont we?
Hard to tell Agostino he didn't have a good enough year last year...

If Colborne HAD to get signed he would have been qualified. No matter how someone spins it, Treliving didn't make him a priority. Sure, he doesn't want to over pay or risk arbitration but if they really liked Colborne and thought he was instrumental in this teams long term success then he would have been qualified.
So no he doesn't have to be signed and we really wouldn't miss him that much if another team decided to overpay.

Colborne and Jooris are goods bets to re-sign in Calgary -- Colborne for more than the QO, Jooris for less. Can't see either guy wanting to look elsewhere.
As for Ortio, perhaps having Hartley gone (and a legit chance at a backup gig) is enough to entice him back.
The rest of the guys on the farm can re-sign if they want but obviously the team isn't married to keeping them (except Freddie Hamilton apparently).

Quality over quantity.
This frees up 9 contract spots and almost 10M dollars in salary, mostly for people who weren't going to make the NHL roster.
Some of them may sign AHL deals and a few may sign lower-value deals if they want to stick with the Flames.
Great asset management, IMO.
