If I had to describe myself to someone from a foreign country in 2 words, it would be "Canadian Engineer", 3 words "White Canadian Engineer", 4 words "Straight, white, Canadian Engineer". Because I think those words most succinctly describe my culture, socio economic status and privilege (SJW triggered!).

And I do get your point that nationality is a made up construct, but as a non-religious person I can't think of any other label that immediately jumps to mind that doesn't sound arrogant. "Dad"?...argh.

Haha, really? You would make sure a stranger knew right away you were an engineer? That's hilarious.

Yeah no kidding...

You would obviously need to clarify it with an employment status.

I'm not "proud" I'm Canadian, I'm *happy* I am. Proud implies I deliberately chose to be born here. An immigrant could legitimately be proud, having chosen the status, but I just fell into it. I know I'm lucky, because there are many many worse countries to be a citizen of, but that doesn't mean I should feel superior and run up the flag.

I guess I don't see the necessity of labels in the first place.

You can run up the flag without feeling superior, that's kind of where I'm at. I consider myself pretty proud to be Canadian, but have always understood that it's the lottery of life that got me here, not my own doing.

I think a guy can still be really proud of his country even though he was just born here, especially if that guy participates in democracy and feels the choices of him and his peers have helped, no matter how minimally, to shape the country as it is today.

For example Stephan Harper started going full American Republican near the end of his reign and had some especially embarrassing ideas, one could even say anti Canadian ideas to deal with the threat of terrorism. Which in turn was at least partially to blame for his demise this past election. So I feel I can be proud of that, as I was part of it.

I think that moderate Muslims in Canada have done a much better job at denouncing radicalism in the past few years.

It takes courage to do and they deserve a lot of credit for doing so.
