The proposal is awful. There should have been a proposal before the flood like in 2011 for a 2014 project. The fact that we had to wait 4 years for a proposal the city didnt even know about and cant budget for is insane.

Of course in his usual condescending style he ends with a quip that Calgarians don't need a wealthy New Yorker coming to town and telling us what we need or don't.
While that may be true, unless and until he has something constructive or definitive to say I wish he would STFU already. I am so tired of his arrogant ass.

I have to pitch to the investor not the other way around.

Get some Trudeau infrastructure bucks from the Feds while the economy is crap and start moving forward. The next couple of years will be a deadzone in Calgary as it stands, there will be no new commercial office towers until the office space supply glut is vacuumed up. There's a lot of trades that could be put to work building the arena while the rest of the economy is slow. If we wait for things to turnaround, the project cost will start rising again.

People are using the concert argument to justify the arena. That's fine, but why should the city pay 450 million to have more concerts?

Nenshi was busy enough on twitter today but no time for Bettman. Embarrassing.

Honestly, they should just do the arena separately. Or build it first where there is space to allow for the option to add whatever monstrosity in the same few blocks later. But ffs, not on lands that require millions just to be prepared to build on.

As is often the case, Nenshi's delivery could use a bit more tact, but the underlying message is correct.
Bettman is just a travelling salesman trying to sell us a monorail.

So if a politician has over 60 per cent approval ratings he gets to be unprofessional and snarky? Just because Nenshi uses social media as a tool to communicate with citizens doesn't mean he needs to use social media's flippant d-bag tone as well. Or maybe he just can't help himself.

I don't disagree with this. But we are where we are. So all of the stakeholders need to get together, fix the plan and get on with construction.

Why should he make time for him really? I thought he might, but it doesn't matter that he didn't. Bettman is always going to tow the owner line. It's always going to be urgently needed and there's always going to be a veiled relocation threat.
He did this in Edmonton, he did this in Pittsburgh, and I'm sure he did it in New Jersey.
Everyone has seen the playbook for a new arena/stadium in multiple sports and it's being followed pretty much step by step here. Nothing revolutionary was going to come out of Bettman's mouth on this.

In responding to Bettman's badly timed threat, Nenshi speaks for pretty much every Calgarian I know. I only wish the mayor had used stronger language to tell Bettman to get stuffed.

I consider the entire project and funding as a whole. Also, again, people are using the concert argument to justify the whole proposal.
So i reiterate, why spend 450 million for a few more concerts?

The prudent thing right now, in the city's current economic climate, would be for the Flames to back off a bit. Even if they don't want to rethink their whole proposal, which really they should. Long term or not, this is the wrong time to be asking for money here. I think this is another part of the reason that people are miffed at this whole thing.
