Edit to add: I got curious after looking up Fuhr's stats in 1988/89. I know Fuhr was a good goalie, but I've always felt he was overrated. Man, his stats don't do him any favours. Only 4 times was his GAA top 20 in the league, never top 10. And only once was his save% top 20 in the league and that year it was top 10, but his GAA was not top 20 that year.
10 times he was in top 10 in wins, 7 of those times was with the powerhouse Oiler. Also during his time with the Oilers he twice lead the league in wins.
So, maybe he visually looked good, but his stats sure don't make him seem that good.

And 20 years from now people will look at videos of Mikka Kipprusoff and scoff and shake their heads at what a bum he was, and how funny it is that useless scrubs like him actually got paid to play in the NHL.
I don't see the point in comparing athletes from different eras like that. Yeah, goalies weren't as athletic or well-trained as they are today. Nobody was. There are sprinters today at obscure U.S. colleges who run faster than Jesse Owens did when he won gold at the Olympics. Doesn't make Jesse Owens a useless slug. If Owens had the same training regimen and coaching that today's sprinters have, he would have been faster.

I never thought fuhr was that good with the grease, he let in a lot of goals but they always scored more
I remember that game. Flames won 7-2 (and then lost 6-0 to the Oilers the very next day).
Also, regarding that note about Fuhr's numbers. Yeah 3.83 GAA and .875 save percentage were above average in the NHL at that time, that really makes you really appreciate Mike Vernon's 2.65 GAA and .897 save percentage that season (speaking of someone who should be in the Hall of Fame).
As for the most memorable Fleury goal of all-time, I still think it has to be this one in Game 6 OT 1991:

Without that giant chip on his shoulder he never would have endured and made it through what he did. You take the good with the bad.
I love the little bugger and hope one day he gets Hall of Fame consideration.

I agree with all of this. It doesn't change the fact that the goalies back then were laughably bad. It's more from a humorous perspective - the moves they make to try and stop pucks are hilarious. They come like 15 feet out of their crease haha
If the guy had a bit more humility and tact, his jersey would've been retired long ago. Instead, every time he opens his mouth, he pushes back the timeline.
The Flames gave him a try out as a goodwill gesture, something Im sure that was meant to be a first step towards a jersey retirement of some sort. Instead of being grateful for the opportunity when he was cut (something that everyone knew he would be), the guy crapped all over the the organization and its players once again. I'm sure that left some really sour feelings about him amongst the ownership group.
Theo needs to shut up for 5-10 years, and he'll probably get consideration again.

not sure why some are getting so bent outta shape...Wayne himself said when he was coaching the Yotes that most of the players were more skilled than he ever was...he also commented that they had better training, better equipment, better fitness, ect.

But I'd imagine the majority of fans would. I could be wrong, but anecdotally I've only ever run into a few fans on CP that vehemently dislike Fleury, where as in real life it seems everyone loves him and wants to see his jersey retired.

I don't have a lot of time for people that are as arrogant and self centered as he is. Personal opinion.

I used to work at a grocery store as a kid, and would help Fleury and his wife out getting cuts of meat, grabbing bags of water softening salt, etc. Always chatted him up and got to know him. As brazen as he is with authority (and given his past, it's understandable), Theo is a really nice, no nonsense small town guy at heart. He would always talk to me about the Flames, hockey and random subjects and was really respectful and nice to our staff. I'd be fine seeing his number retired; and considering the past trauma he's been through, it would be nice to cut him some slack and hang it in the rafters.
