I'm sure there is some kind of mechanism (contractual or otherwise) where the team pays the fine on Hartley's behalf instead of Bob personally cutting a cheque.

It's happened similarly before. McGrattan last year or some point as a Flame. Godard once and Oliwa before that.

Refs warn the benches to cut it out, and then if the coach does that with a guy with that repuatation, justification for the refs to toss that guy.

Third man in is not an automatic suspension. There was no reason at all to expect he would get one.

So Bob Hartley is going to be booked for a speaking engagement this summer by Murray Edwards. I hear he is getting paid 50k for it.

Would the Flames really be that much worse off without Engelland? They'd lose out in the toughness department for sure, but I think Wotherspoon would be at least as competent as a defenceman.
I don't get the hate on Engelland and I don't get that some posters still keep pushing an inexperienced Wotherspoon to be in the lineup over a veteran Engelland. I get it that we all like our young prospect to be in the lineup but this is not the right time. I know it works on having one young guy Gaudreau and it is working for Bennett replacing Raymond but it doesn't work for everyone. Losing Engelland now will hurt the Flames because it means more ice times with Wideman, Russell and Brodie. These guys are already playing close to 30 minutes a game with Engelland on the lineup. He might not play like Giordano or the other 3 but at least he can log in at least 20 or more minutes.

I am glad noone gets suspended but still puzzled on the 50k fine for Hartley.

Hartley went to the drugstore and bought his team a big box of experience. It just cost him $50,000.

Maybe Hartley gets a bonus on his next paycheque that covers the fine.

I agree, just the way you said he promptly got himself a misconduct, I though you were implying that Bollig actually earned it, versus it being more about Hartley throwing him out after being warned as you mentioned. I likely miss understood your initial point.

Sorry this was a response to Browna.

I still don't understand why we are not talking about Hamhuis getting a suspension. I don't give a crap if he joined the fray "because he was worried about the safety of his teammate". He willingly entered and participated in the fight (well after it had started). He assisted in tackling Engelland to the ice and he very clearly was the 3rd man involved in the fight.

Love this BS by Dan Hamhuis : (courtesy of Calgary Flames site)

With Engelland already engaged with Dorsett, Hamhuis skated over and joined the fray with a bear hug on Engelland. Post-game Hamhuis suggested the linesman asked him to step into the melee and lend some assistance with action scattered all across the ice.

Engelland disregarded the comment.

"I never heard anything like that,” Engelland said. “All I did when we got up I seen him coming across the ice so I was just trying to protect myself and do what I can."

If what Hamhuis claim was true then that linesman is an idiot and shouldn't be working for the rest of the season.

Calgary Flames Head Coach Bob Hartley has been fined $50,000 for his responsibility for the incident that took place with 1:17 remaining in regulation of the first-round playoff game in Vancouver on Friday, April 17, the National Hockey League announced today. The fine was issued in accordance with By-Law 17.3 (a) for conduct prejudicial to or against the welfare of the League.

Number of fights during the regular season:
Dorsett = 17
Hamhuis = 2
Sbisa = 2
Richardson = 2
Matthias = 0

TOTAL = 23
Bollig = 8
Engelland = 7
Ferland = 2
Stajan = 0
Potter = 0

TOTAL = 17

What is with all the 17's? Maybe it's a sign...;-)

Either Hamhuis is telling the truth and the linesman should be fired, or Hamhuis is a liar and since his comments make the NHL (and the officials) look like a joke... so shouldn't he be fined in accordance with By-Law 17.3 (a) for conduct prejudicial to or against the welfare of the League?

Or both I guess

I'm confused about this as well. According to the rules, is what Hamhuis did not suspendable? I'm genuinely confused how this point is being ignored by the league and how a dumb 'instigator' penalty seems to be all the talk.

See. As I predicted, a $50k handshake to our friend, Gary Bettman, and any threat of a suspension is resolved. The important lesson? The rules only apply to little people. Not rich owners who were Hawks in the last round of union busting. Fortunately, the Flames' ownership is willing to do what it takes to win. I laugh at all those Canucks fans expecting "justice.". What naive rubes!

No need, I'm sure Burke has already signed the reimbursement cheque which will be cashed before the ink even dries.
