It all depends on the context in which I am using it for

If it about specifiably what the players or player did... it's they
if it's in regardless to the organization and it's fan base I use the word we

I've invested more time and emotion investment in this team then most player ever will, and once they have forgotten all about their stay in Calgary I will continue to invest my time and be emotional attached to this team. Once you put in twenty years I really don't care if someone has an issue when I use they would we.... I sure as hell take the chrips when "they" do something not as positive

He gets excited for goals and big saves and hits, but why not? I like that. Big moments call for it. Here, B's opener from 2013, I don't know how you can not like this kind of calling.

Or here, Bruins lose, still a good call even if you can sort of hear the disappointment.

Neither, most times I refer in the first person.

"I can't believe I lost in overtime last night when I missed the big save on that break"
"I need to sign a solid centre"
"I just drafted a solid centre"
"I just traded away my centre, again"
"I'm cheering for me to make the playoffs. I know I can do it"

But the media should NEVER EVER use it.

And they do. Not all of them - but some do for sure. I think that is unacceptable.
I find myself using about an equal mix of they and we.

What I hate is when the media says, "take a look at the Crosbys, Monahans, Bergerons of the league". There is only one of each of those guys, so stop pluralizing names. It's as wrong as typing in an apostrophes when correctly pluralizing a word. There are many words that can be used to add more players into the discussion (number one centres, Penguins, DBags, etc.), so there is no need to say Monahans. If you are talking about Monahan's toaster, that is a different story.

And we often are. Sometimes he'll throw a slice in there.

I use "they," but I think that's probably what's most appropriate.

I use "we" most of the time I think. I recall back in the dark ages, it seemed like fewer people used "we". To me, it seems like when people say "they", they are distancing themselves from the team.

I just double-checked the roster and came to the sad realization that I've been a Flames fan longer than any player on the team has been alive.

When the Flames lose, I feel like I personally didn't do enough to will them to victory. When the Flames win, I know that we did everything we could.

This. Has happened with certain jets fans on numerous occasions. Like I'm reading the post and then I'm thinking wait this makes absolutely no sense...wtf. Then realize they're not talking about the Flames.

Hey getbak when the flames lose a game do you punish yourself by rereading the cba over and over?

It's 'they' for me. I'm not a part of the organization, and don't want to steal any credit from those who are.

I think this stems from an English pronoun problem more than anything. When comparing teams you might say "they do such and such" (refering to the opposition), and then trying to compare to the good guys you would like to say "they" because it's correct, but it's confusing. So, instead, we say "we", and live with being incorrect and unconfusing.

I don't do it deliberately, but I seem to use "we" when referring to the Flames. I guess it really comes down to you whether or not you see a team as the players on the ice or a greater entity that includes the supporters and community. Team sports are almost universally an us vs them proposition so I don't see a problem with identifying as part of the greater 'team'.

In practice this ends up extra confusing because I live in Vancouver, and people who don't know me well enough to know my affiliation always get confused and I have to clarify that my "we" is not the same as their "we". I should probably start using "they", but the "we" is kind of subconscious at this point.

I have no problem with both.

Using we you self identify as a supporter of given team, vs just a viewer of the team. I could be routing for a team other than the Flames and wouldn't use we, but I often slit into the we trap with the Flames.

I always refer to them as The Flames. Don't ever say we because I don't play or workforce The Flames but I have used they in the past. To each their own though!
