C'mon, did it for Coke Money? Bull! Must have been a VERY rare recreational habit or you got confused because the girl was buying a bottle of Diet Coke after cheerleading practice.
I've known about 5 of the Stamps cheerleaders over the years, 4 of them did it because it was away from the job training (they were all dancers), one of which owns her own dance studio, one works downtown for an O&G company and one is a raging skank who could be dead, the other two... one's a mom, and don't know what happened to the other.
All five situations are unrelated and individual specific. So worrying about your 11 year old daughter, adding that you knew a cheerleader who did coke and applying them to this conversation is being completely obtuse.
The fire and ice girls are some pretty suburban looking university age students who look like they're having fun at a job that's got some pretty cool perks. In addition they’re kind of cute and maybe dress a bit to show that, but it’s standard for the entertainment industry. Try walking through a plus 15 in the summer months and worry about your daughter getting a summer student job downtown.

Ask the girls who perform the job. Boosts their egos, they aren't being degraded, it looks good on their resume working for a professional organisation and they actually serve a purpose. I'd wager the girls like the job and don't feel objectified, it's not like they are forced into it and it's a last resort.
They are closer to models than strippers imo in terms of how it effects their career, ego and life direction. You don't hear about the Ice Girl that's homeless and on crack because of how it ruined her life.

I guess women must have super high body temperatures to need to wear the F&I uniform while men wear their track suits on the ice.

The girls do skate around quite a bit more and probably get hotter and work up more of sweat. The guys just stand around and scoop up the snow into a garbage can.

The job is in fact sexist and what ever the word is for perferring good looking people to do it.
Women only are chosen to do the job soley based on their appearance.
The question becomes is this negative. It's certainly not exploitive as there isn't a choice between going hungry and being homeless and it doesn't pay well relative to other low experience jobs you can do so this isn't any barrier to leaving.
The ogling of women inbetween sporting plays as entertainment I am not a big fan of and would say the flames shouldn't promote that as entertainment. But it is certainly acceptable to sell as entertainment in our current society and F&I girls and cheerleaders certainly aren't the place to start this fight.
In the end it doesn't bother me either way and isn't worth the energy to fight over. There are better fights to take over real exploitation and institutional sexism that effort is better spent on.

Lol, no kidding! I've seen what they earn and you cant buy any coke with that kind of pay.
Yeah, those summer interns get worked like rented mules.

They have to skate too. So this is incorrect.

This is not really true. I'm certain a less attractive girl who has skated for 15 years is more likely to get a position than an attractive girl with big boobs who has never skated.

And in terms of the Stamps/Roughnecks they have to have extensive dance experience.
One of my clients actually got a degree in dance from the U of C. Her father was not happy, but she manages a dance studio in BC now so there are definitely opportunities for them to make a career out of doing something they love.

There are enough men skating around the ice during a regular Flames game. If anything, it would be sexist NOT to have the Fire and Ice girls there.

Charlie Wilson would have a divergent opinion. "You can teach them to skate but you can't teach them to grow...."

This. Further, I'm pretty sure their personality has a big part to do with it too. AFAIK, they also handle the intermission games, run around the stands handing stuff out, etc. They aren't there only because the org thinks they need something to distract the crowd from how bad the team is playing *cough* Oilers *cough*

You guys are really grasping at straws. It's blatantly obvious that a prerequisite of the job is being an attractive young woman. Don't try to pretend this is something that it's not. If you want to defend the existence of Ice Girls, then choose a better angle.

Sure, so what? The point is that the position doesn't exist primarily because they want to show attractive young women off at the games, like say some cheer leading positions might. The position exists either way, they are just choosing to employ some attractive young women in a game that's dominated by attractive young men.

But so is NHL, 100%. Those sexists team GMs hire only big, strong, fast, talented men to play hockey in front of all the families watching, instead of setting a true Canadian diversity example for the viewing public.
McCallum's complaint is very typical for someone that's simply irritated by something but does not really have anything sensible to offer: she doesn't like seeing attractive women on ice but she does not offer a plausible alternative solution, because none of the solutions would stand the reverse critique test.

Too me, pubically shaming these girls in a newspaper for wanting to look good and have a fun job for easy money is far worse than the Flames offering them chance to do so.
