If we look at the 2013/14 season and only include defenseman in 5 on 5 situations who played more than 40 games last year, TJ Brodie faced the 13th toughest competition among all d-men (Gio was 7th), while starting in his own zone 60% of the time (7th highest) and finishing in the o-zone 50% of the time.
So he drove possession like a madman against tough competition and exited the zone with ease, he had elite level numbers last year and he's 24 years old...
Also he's a good lookin' dude.

40 games, so we're not even taking about playing at a high level for a season or more... half a season is good enough it seems... like I said lets not get ahead of ourselves

He said players that played more than 40 games. Ie, eliminating players who didn't play enough to draw comparison.
Brodie did.

Green text will be necessary for all Oiler fans on this board when discussing the flames in a negative light

If you're misinterpreting those stats then I wouldn't get ahead of yourself telling everyone else to not get ahead of themselves.
Brodie had elite defensive/possession/zone stats last year... that's not getting ahead of anything.

They will get paid, but at least we know that they will be worth the raises.

What leaves me unconcerned is that I'm sure Gio can see the upward projection of this team, so there shouldn't be a desire to sign with a contender. Hopefully we should be competing for a lower seed playoff spot by the end of next season. Also, with all the cap space we have, and the inevitable rise in the salary cap each year, I would have no issues paying Gio 7+ million if he's maintains his current level of play. He might also be willing to take a small hometown discount as it appears he really relishes being a leader here.
As for Brodie, I could see him getting a 1 or 2 year bridge deal and then cashing in after that. If he wants term this summer than I would think it's reasonable to assume he's not going to get elite-type money right away. Maybe something along the lines of 4 or 5 years at 4 to 4.5 million. Would hate to have him "Tyler Myers" on us (although realistically I do not see that happening).
No matter what happens, I want to see these two together for a very long time.

I can see Calgary making Gio the highest paid player on the team. That'll be the bar, and no contracts will be higher then his. If I recall I think Detroit did something like that with Lidstrom.
That way, he is the leader and is paid as that.

TJ Brodie is 24 and has just one full NHL season under his belt. The fact there's room for debate about him being on the verge of elite status speaks for itself.

I think the discussion is more about the pair being elite. Brodie isn't elite or on the verge of elite (assuming we are talking elite as Weber/Doughty type class), he's very good.
Gio is on the verge of being elite and just needs to do what he did last year a 2nd time to cement himself in that class.
That said - Brodie is ahead of where Giordano was at the same age (although Gio's path isn't that common).

Dan Boyle is another guy who hit elite stats at an older age.

While it is nice to compare Giordano-Brodie with current best tandems, it is also interesting how they would be rated against some of the best duos Flames had in past. Probably a bit behind 2004 Regehr-Leopold, a bit better than Hamrlik-Phaneuf maybe.

Right now imo they'd be ahead of Regher-Leo 2004 pair but behind Hamrlik-Dion(those 2 were great together).
