I wouldn't be against mandatory screening for everyone that has been to West Africa. Seems like that would be a normal precaution.

How hard would it be to actually look at inbound passenger manifests and do mandatory screenings of people who have traveled through an Ebola infected area? I would not be opposed to something like this.

Then it'll still be a relatively minor issue? That still more people die from the common flu every year? Yeah joking is acceptable because it will never turn into a pandemic. SARS and Bird Flu will go down as worse. North America has the health infrastructure for something like this. West Africa? Not so much.

Yes, quarantining a continent seems like a very measured approach...

The entire continent? That's a stretch...
What about Canadians in Africa? Abandon them?

I think people misunderstood me. I didn't mean shutdown the borders for everyone, maybe just the people traveling to and from West Africa. There should be a travel ban. Perhaps there can be exceptions for aid workers. Just a thought.

Ok, so what's happening? Here's what I thought.

1. You're not contagious unless you're actually showing symptoms (i.e. fever, vomiting)
2. When you are showing symptoms, only bodily fluids are contagious. (i.e. sweat, vomit)
3. He was not exhibiting symptoms on the plane. He got back Sept 20 and started having symptoms Sept 24. Admitted to hospital Sept 26.

So if he's potentially exposed 100 people, wouldn't that be after he was exhibiting symptoms? So nobody on the plane, but maybe all the people in the ER the first time he went (and got sent away with antibiotics), his family members, if he was out in the community, etc. I could see it being reasonable that his family members and some health works have been in contact with his bodily fluids.

Re: the borders. I don't think it would be unreasonable to quarantine people arriving back to NA from West Africa for 21 days or however long it takes to know that you're in the clear. Especially aid workers or people who have been in direct contact with someone exhibiting symptoms of Ebola.

Oh! Beaten to the Pandemic 2 joke.

Some others interviewed saw the man throwing up near his apartment. That would be a major aspect of the spread if anything comes out of it. Though I hope most individuals are smart enough to not poke vomit.

I would guess it is individuals likely in contact with him while he was ill in USA. He was asymptomatic on the plane from the sounds of things so they likely consider them low or no risk individuals. Friends and family are the individuals they want to look at hard. Last I heard, about 4 were in isolation right now. I would also think they'll interview nurses and medical staff who ran tests on him during his first visit.

That brings it up to 4 Americans if memory serves.
