Let's hope this means they see coaching as the problem, not the players.

I remember reading a while back that the Canucks had a very team favourable buyout clause with Tortorella.

Yeah it seems bizarre to sign a long term deal that wasn't guaranteed. This sounds more like an NFL type contract. It's the type of structure you would expect maybe a new coach hire with a lame duck GM but Gillis had lots of term left on his deal.

Some teams will pay out, and others will want to claw back $$$ if the coach is rehired somewhere during the term.
That said, I expect it to be $1.6 per season

1.6m when he signed a 5 year 10m contract is a good negotiation by Aquilini/Gillis whomever did it
|
Hiring the wrong coach and having to fire him after 1 year is not what I would call a good negotiation, but sure... go Nucks!

If it's that favourable Torts is truly an idiot.

Who knows, maybe the Canucks had an out clause for that payout amount if they wanted him done/he wanted out after 1 year.
Or, some stipulation that he would get punted, and that payout, if Gillis was gone, or a spectacled former player takes over as President or, an NBA owner gets kicked out of the league...and if they didn't punt him now, they were on the hook for a lot more.

Either way I would think Torts will go at least a season out of work as it's hard to imagine him finding work immediately until the stink of this season fades.

they definitely had an out clause, it was reported after Gillis got fired that both of them did by Tony Gallagher who was a Gillis media 'guy' so he would have known

I think Toronto will express some interest. Tortellini in Toronto could be a win-win situation.

Likely to get an NBCSN job for the year, while him and Feaster try and figure out how they can return somewhere together again.
Torts knows something about winning Stanley Cups, and Feaster can slickly talk and hoodwink his way into his second straight job...and since Lowe should be getting the firing itch within the next 365 days, there's a nice fit up north.

Wasn't this all but confirmed already when Conroy let slip that the Canucks were looking at Ward?

Yeah, he has a cheap buy out clause in there for sure. But they were saying earlier that it was 50% of the remaining, not 20%.

No surprise here. Maybe the Oilers and Canucks swap their coaches. Imagine Torts going to Edmonton and Eakins to Van.
Anyways both Edmonton and Vancouver are no good.

Watch Linden hire the coach then GM. Guy doesn't have a spec of qualification to be running an organization.

Tortorella is exactly what Edmonton needs. Truly.
