Yeah, I can't help but think there's a significant racial element to how Subban and Kane are treated by fans and the media.

I think it's probably more closely related to "black culture" than to black ethnicity, but that doesn't really change things much. I'd say Subban and Kane take more cues from their peers who are rich and famous black athletes in other sports, than they do from white hockey players. Again, they're not hated for being n*****s, they're hated because they ACT like n*****s.

This seems to rub a lot of people the wrong way in the hockey community.

I'd say that still qualifies it pretty firmly as a race issue.

Just my 2 cents.

Glad a bunch of white boys on an internet forum solved this racial conundrum.

Seriously??? It is nothing to do with the colors. Sean Avery got criticized a lot because of his antics, Alex Burrows been criticized as well and both of these guys are white players. Both players I mentioned deserves it. The players mentioned on the article Byfuglien is a good player. He is big and the guy can score but he's been criticized for being lazy which is deserving. As an athlete you should always take care of yourself, but with Buf he lets himself become out of shape. Yes i know PK Subban was criticized for tugging his jersey mocking the opponents' fans. I am sure if that was Plekanec mocking the other team's fans, he'll get criticize too. As for Evander Kane, he's young and immature. He's got the talent but he's selfish. Ray Emery had a reputations. Beating up a goalie who's not willing to fight, fighting with his teammates in Ottawa. I believed him and Big Ern or was it another guy fought in practice.
Jarome Iginla who is half black not being criticize... it is because he is a nice guy. Wayne Simmonds who is also black are just doing fine.

It isn't everything. It's definitely not nothing.

Solid contribution there.

I don't think anyone has claimed that racism doesn't exist. But the article is a piece of garbage IMO.

so is their behavior hurting people? If not I don't see how it matters, it's their life, maybe they like black culture, whose place is it to say not to. He put a brick of cash to his ear? So what? Black or white just leave people alone even if they're acting like fools, it's their life and not anyone's to judge if they aren't hurting anyone. (Not saying you were judging but I find the constant need to impose one's beliefs on another in so many people, Subban can get gold teeth and a cane for all I care, it's his life).

You were the one I was thinking of when I posted about the veiled use of "thug" to describe those guys, but I didn't want to name names since I didn't think it would be fair to call you a racist. After your last two posts, however, I see that I shouldn't have bothered beating around the bush.

Regardless, so long moon. It's been real.

I know it's easy thank-bait, but don't extent my comment beyond the actual words that I used. The pronoun 'this' is used to describe the issue present-to-hand.

In plain language: I'm not saying people are denying racism exists. I'm saying people are blind to the way that institutional racism conditions the expectations and perceptions of the specific players mentioned. The article is useful for at least putting this question on the table. The way the article has been almost universally dismissed is indicative, to me, of how far hockey culture needs to go before we can legitimately bracket questions of race, as so many in this thread wish to.

Soccer analogy:

In certain parts of the world, conning the refs is considered an admirable skill - it's a cultural thing. That doesn't make me a racist if I find it distasteful.

There may be elements of "black culture" that certain black players embrace that people might reasonably find objectionable. Culture doesn't protect you from judgement/consequences any more than religion does.

Players are criticized rightly or wrongly no matter the colour of the skin and ethnicity.
I have heard way more criticism against white guys, probably because there is more of them.

As for racism, yeah it exists.
However, the notion that racism is exclusive domain of white people is a complete nonsense.

Unfortunately, many whites feel it is necessary to overcompensate.

I do think hockey culture in Canada suffers from xenophobia. Black players and Russians are often hit with criticism that I don't think a white guy from Canada would get.

In some ways though I'm not ever sure if its a race/country thing... any sort of individualism is frowned upon. In a lot of ways it hurts the sport because there is no one to market because basically every player is as dry as paint.

For every black player who as been criticized about attitude, the shape he is in, celebrations, or fighting in the wrong situation and circumstance, I can name u at least 5 white Canadians.

Guys like penner, phanuef, hextall, billy smith, Stortini, Bertuzzi, and the list goes on and on(point made), all take heat for the same behavior.

Iginla takes heat from fans too. Never won a cup etc. Gretzky and Crosby have been called winers. Patrick Kane was a thug for getting into it with a cabbie. Lemiuex was lazy.

I am a person of color, and I take big offense to people who use race as an excuse for not overcoming bad habits and bad situations.

If I don't get a promotion, I work harder.

If I celebrate to much, I celebrate less.

If I fight too much I stop fighting.

If I'm too arrogant I taste humility.

If I have a weakness I work to overcome it.

If I'm out out of shape, I ex... Scratch that, been overweight for years. But u get my point.

A strong character person overcomes their obstacles, and takes advantage of their gifts. They don't blame others for puting obstacles in front of them. Strong character people take advantage of their gifts.

Everybody has obstacles! Everybody! Deal with it and move on. Period.
