Why the hell would Gio want to go to Russia anyways? Oh, wait.....

During the Canucks game they just said Hamhuis might practice tomorrow, and hopefully play against the Leafs before leaving for Sochi.
Doesn't sound too serious.

If he can't play at 100% saturday he shouldn't go. Minimal practice time to learn together on ice and the stakes are high. Players going over all need to be ready to hit the ground running.
You're no hero for playing injured when there are players who are just as good ready to cover for you.

I hope Hamhuis plays. More chance of him aggravating it, and Gio gets his ticket to the Soviet Union.

And Duhatschek said on the Fan when I was listening last week that he was told it was Gio. So who the hell knows.

Pretty sure TSN doesn't get to choose.

Yzerman told Gio to have his bags packed. At least, I remember that tweet from Bob Mackenzie.

This season Giordano has a +5.8 CFRel % and Seabrook has a +3.7. If you compare the past 3 seasons (playoffs excluded, most recent to least) Giordano has +5.8, -0.3, and +0.7, whereas Seabrook has +3.7, -3.5, and +0.1. Giordano has been better every season according to those stats exclusively.
They have both hovered around 29% quality of competition which is a stat I don't fully understand. Giordano has started only 41% of his shifts in the offensive zone the past two seasons whereas Seabrook is around 56% which makes Giordano's numbers even more impressive. All numbers from extraskater.com which is a great site for advanced stat tracking
|
the problem with using CFRel between the two is the different in teams
in that sense Seabrook is punished because his team is good (most of the blackhawks are, Keith's CFRel is lower than Seabrooks) and Giordano's CFRel is rewarded for being on a team that struggles more

ya I would trust McKenzie
I would take Giordano over Marc Staal if it comes to it
not over Seabrook though, but we will see, sounds like Hamhuis plays saturday anyway

Maybe its just me, but Seabrook was terrible last olympics, even in his limited ice time.

Aren't the talking heads speculating which hand the player shoots as to who the replaement would be. Sounds like Seabrook would need a right handed shooting guy to get an injury to have a shot.

Weird, because according to this: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=440763
TSN says Gio is next in line

On Tuesday Mark Giordano was told by Team Canada management that he's next in line for a spot at Sochi.

Gillis talked about it today, he said Hamhuis made good progress but they will see how things go over the next couple of days:
http://www.teamradio.ca/wp-content/u...e_Feb62014.mp3
Gillis comes across as super rude and dickish to his local media.

Staal is a better player than seabrook for sure. If Gio doesn't make it, I hope Staal does.

Staal's wife just had a baby this week, maybe he would rather stay close to home for a while.

This is another reason that makes corsi/fenwick stats hard to use for comparisons. If Seabrook played for the Flames, his corsi would almost certainly be lower and his corsi relative would be higher. Reverse for Gio. Both are very good defensemen.
Gio certainly gets buried with defensive zone duty much more often, which makes his possession numbers and offensive numbers very impressive. Their production (Gio = 1.67 points/60min, Seabrook = 1.62 points/60min) is very similar.
Gio does face slightly better competition. TotTm% QoC takes the percentage of the game (TOI/60) that their average opponent plays. Seabrook faces 28.9%, Gio 29.7%. League leaders in this category are Selke players like Toews, Datsyuk, Zetterberg at 30.4%. League average would be somewhere around 27% (27.7 would be the exact number if no penalties ever occured).

More likely he'd do anything possible to get away from it.
Even those Russian hotels have to start looking mighty attractive after dealing with a crying baby.

I thought I was going crazy remembering how bad seabrook was in the last olympics... how many times babcock stapled him to the bench, can't imagine he wants to do that again...
