One reason why I'd like to Burke trade to target 2015 picks instead of 2014 during the upcoming trade deadline. Let's increase the odds in a good year, as opposed to one in an average year. I think it also increases the chance that pick will be higher, as it's farther out and some teams always just seem to do surprisingly bad (if its for the nearest draft, teams always have a fairly good idea of where they would be picking).

Canada is a much more skilled team. We could bring a bunch of guys like the US players if we wanted. That's actually what Canada has done a ton of in recent years, picked a ton of size/hitters instead of skill. Also pounding the likes of Germany/Norway really isn't that impressive and a bit of a jerk move. You're going to beat them easily, no need to physically pound them into the ground. Save that for the teams that matter.
The non-televised Switzerland/Sweden game is a bit of a barn burner early - 3-2 Sweden after one.

This Mitchell Marner guy in London is really impressive as a rookie as well. He's small (or at least not big).. but he's got some moves on him.

In what year do we think the IIHF will finally stop putting up gamesheets/boxscores on their site as PDFs. I literally want to go to the IIHF and fight people every time I click a link on their site and a PDF starts loading.

Collberg sick, not injured. Some sickness is going around in the Swedish team. Several players have had it.

Gillies had best goaltending performance of day saving 96%. No other starter over 92% (RUS pulled Vasilevski 30 minutes in when out of hand)

Looked like there were about 700 fans at the Canada-Germany game, half of them Canadian. Gotta love the contrast between the uber-patriotic bombast of the TSN WJC coverage and the near-absolute disinterest in the event outside Canada.

TSN has always excelled at creating hype. They've done it with trade deadline, free agent frenzy, the juniors and the CFL. Very little substance behind any of those things outside of small pockets of support. None of the 4 used to be televised regularly.
Oh and also with the "something special" Oilers.

You can really see why McDavid is so hyped. The kid looked dominant out there every time he was on the ice and he's only 16... he's still 2 years of development away from the NHL!

Yeah, it's going to be pretty brutal watching him go to one of the perennial bottom feeders so they can ruin him too.

Hopefully the Flames are that bottom feeder that gets McDavid!

There's more than 700 fans obviously... but its not like Sweden-Germany would play to a full house in Canada either. And likely the only reason there is more than 700 fans in Canada is because the tickets are typically sold in packages where you have to pay for other games to get the Canada games.

Which begs the question, why host the wjc outside Canada if there is no fan support?
Watching Germany and Slovakia and lots of empty blue seats. Must suck for the players to play in an empty arena.
North America supports the wjc way more than the Euros. Given that the World Championships are always played in Europe due to conflict with the Stanley Cup Playoffs, why don't they make the wjc permanent in North America? That way we aren't up at ungodly times of the day to watch our team. Oh wait, the Euros control the IIHF, that will never happen. Sucks being a colony.

In Finland at least there isn't much television coverage and it's been years since the games have been televised on a channel that most people get. I think previously I've had to set up some crappy pay per view stream to watch the games.
Don't know how it is in other countries. But even in Finland you have to be a hockey fan to notice that the tournament exists. A couple of minutes in the sports news is all you get on the normal channels these days, it seems.

It's held in Canada every second year, and will be held in North America for three straight years starting in 2017.
Seems pretty fair to me. It's still an international competition.

The bolded part is the same for Canada. My wife saw my watching yesterday and said "oh ya that is that tournament you watch every year, what is it again?" My in-laws have no idea what it is, co-workers didn't know what it was when me and another guy were talking about it last week.
I would think most Canadians with TV have TSN but unless you are a sports fan it is probably never watched and most wouldn't even know where it is.
