I'd thank your post, but it would feel wrong. I agree with you, and I sincerely hope it isn't the case. The city needs to say a proper goodbye to the dome. Not this... mess...

Insurance most likely covers a LOT of those expenses, though. Big challenge will be getting things in ship-shape for opening night in October.

the Superdome in New Orleans took 2 years to fix (had extenuating circumstances) but for all purposes it was just a building with a floor
Saddledome is much different, I can't imagine the Flames not playing in Calgary next year but who knows, would be a shame
it may be viewed as untenable and in that case the new Arena is probably built and the Flames play off site for a few seasons

Yeah, Alberta Environment.
No one knew, expected or could prepare for the scope of the flooding that came to Calgary

The river might not go down for a couple of days, and then, at least a few days to pump the water out of the saddledome, if not longer. The Stampede will be just about starting before they can even start cleaning.

The part that boggles my mind is, where would one even be able to displace all that water?
This makes heavy snow removal look like a breeze.

I guess the Stampede concerts at the Saddledome will be cancelled.

The way things are sounding and the fact we are talking about all the electrical systems of the building, the ice making equipment and essentially all building operations being below ground level and under at least 10 ft of water, it seems like this is a real possibility.
Plus, the age of the building, there's a good possibility that it may not be cleared structurally either.

Nashville's rink was flooded back in 2010 but I don't think the water was nearly as high as what the Saddledome is dealing with now.

Cancelling an event due to anticipated flooding in the area is a lot different than anticipating that the building itself would flood.

The last time the Saddledome area was under water was 1932--not really all that long ago. There are photographs. And 100-year flood zone maps include the Saddledome area and all of the areas presently flooding. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone but it's a familiar thing: People build on floodplains; people know they are building on floodplains; people are surprised when floods occur.
My brother is among those evacuated.

I have a very real fear that we don't have NHL hockey in this city next year.
what happens if the Dome is a massive writeoff at this point and repair the damage is simply not worth it.
Could we see the Saskatoon flames, or Seattle Flames for the next year?
|
The Saskatoon Flames.. I'm literally going to jizz in my pants if that happens.

Obviously a much smaller facility, but the ice making equipment, electrical etc. for the rink I play at in NYC was completely submerged and wiped out by hurricane sandy. Everything was back up and running in less than a month.

To me common sense would say if cancelling an event because there is anticipated flooding in the area, maybe it's a good idea to raise the jumbotron.

Seems most have reached the conclusion that the Jumbotron wasn't on the floor anyways. But still, huge differences to cancel an event because Calgary's in a SOLE and traffic is not advised and actually expecting the Saddledome to flood. Hindsight is 20/20 of course.

I work for a company that is working on the cleanup and the word I was hearing about 20 minutes ago was it is up to row 16. people tend to exaggerate with stuff like this, but just passing on all the information I have.

Common sense also says that when you are being told at 3pm there might be a flood and to get the heck out of the area because it is going to flood that your first thought isn't going to be to go into the area to raise a piece of replaceable equipment.
But that's just me.

If true, since there are only 13 or 14 rows in the main part of the lower bowl, that would mean that the lower suites, lower concourse, and the ticket office are all now under water too.
