Our GM is such a great evaluator of talent.

Those guys were all as bad or worse than Babchuk IMO. I certainly wouldn't be singling out Babchuk ahead of most of those guys.

Our defense during the "Young Guns" era was absolutely atrocious. I'd say in general defense has improved significantly overall in the NHL since then and guys that were making our roster as #5-7 guys back in the mid-late 90's wouldn't get a sniff of the NHL these days.

Babchuk wasn't as bad as some people seem to think he was. But this year our defense stayed relatively healthy and thus he couldn't crack the lineup.
Do you remember Kari Eloranta?

You are fortunate. Even when I was 7 I could tell that he was not a guy who knew how to play hockey.

Judging by the franchise's success the past 24 years, the team's drafting history and our current crop of prospects, I think you could say "Our GMs are such great evaluators of talent".

And don't get me started on our "scouting" staff.

It's kinda funny how the Babchuck thread is pretty similar to the worst Flame ever thread.

I thought the 2010/11 Babchuck was a pretty good hockey player. It kind of looks like that's been his thing with every team. Really good at first, then terrible. I am the same way with girlfriends.

Butler is playing because he *is* one of the top six defencemen on this team. Also, FWIW, he was fifth on the team in ES TOI, so no, the team did not treat him like a top-four defenceman. And I'll flip your argument: people rag on Butler because they believe we got screwed on the Regehr trade, therefore have locked themselves into a mindset where everything he does is terrible.

As far as Babchuk goes, the dude had a cannon for a shot, but there was no use dressing a straight PP specialist on a team that had Bouwmeester, Giordano, Wideman and Brodie. I certainly won't argue he was one of the worst players in team history, but he simply did not offer enough to get into the top six on this team.

Wow - just read an article about Babchuk - didn't realize he was a first round pick (21st overall in 2002)... Chicago no less. How would Calgary fans react if that was OUR first rounder. Wait, we've had a few of those. NM.

I am sure there are more on the way.
That's $21.2M in cap space (and an average age of 29.9).

If Kipper hangs 'em up, that would be $27M (31.0)

I don't remember Hulse being bad enough to make this list.
