What're you talking about? The messier signing was horrible for the Rangers. They didn't make the playoffs any of the years he was there after they signed him as a UFA. He even guaranteed that they'd make the playoffs and no one ever brings up that failed guarantee.

That's probably the next move. Hoping that the Flames don't now trade that 1st for a player inferior to O'Reilly in desperation.
|
I don't get the comments saying this was a win now move. This was trying to seize the opportunity to turn a draft pick and cap space into a guy who just turned 22, more of an accelerated rebuild than a win now move. Nice try, but it didn't work. Too bad. I don't think it is a sign that they would trade their first round pick for an older guy with no team control.

Does a team really need to let an agent know that they'd like to sign Getzlaf? Of course teams want to sign him. I'd bet all 29 other teams would love to have him.

If he was so happy, why didn't he sign him for that contract last week or at the beginning of the season? Obviously he would have signed for that amount, and probably without such a team un-friendly second year.

Greg Sherman just had a press availability. He was over the moon! He was very, very happy to get ROR back in the line up this year. We made the Avs much better with this poorly conceived, poorly executed plan.

Not to mention that there is probably no chance that he lives up to that price tag.

It sounds like Daniel Day Lewis has some Oscar competition for next year then.

How was this poorly executed? Flames lose nothing and Avs are paying more than they wanted.

Don't overlook the fact that the Avalanche are a budget team. O'Reilly had a 5M cap hit to the Flames, maybe the Flames owners aren't too happy with going over the cap in actual salary without success but it's an option they can and have exercised.
Colorado is a budget team, O'Reilly's cap hit is inconsequential compared to the 6.5M he's being paid. That's different then the Flames situation.
Also the Avalanche will now have Stastny (if he's still around) and O'Reilly making 6.5M+ next year. How's the contract negotiations going to go with Duchene? I mean, if Duchene has a decent season next year there's no reason he shouldn't be asking for 6M+ as well. Same goes for Landeskog.

The AAV was what Reilly was looking for in the preseason. Sherman and the Avs didn't want to pay that much. Now they are because they were forced. There's not much else Feaster could have done. Considering the picks we have, that was the max offer sheet he can make.
Was the Philly offer poorly conceived because they didn't get Weber? I understand the move by Feaster and I think things are going to be tight in Colorado financially going forward.
I suspect you're a Feaster hater no matter what.

Honestly it was an honest try. The Avs are screwed next summer when there is a good chance RoR becomes a UFA or they qualify him for $6.5M. Perhaps he will be interested in signing with us next summer. The Avs have to repair this relationship if they want to keep him long term

This isn't fantasy hockey where GMs hold grudges. If a GM refuses to pick up the phone when Feaster or anyone else calls they shouldn't have their job. It's a business. I bet no matter how much Buffalo were pissed at The Greasers for the Vanek offer sheet, they would still listen to any offers.

I thought one of the major reasons Burke was pissed at Lowe over the Penner offer sheet was that Lowe didn't give Burke a courtesy call first.

One would hope that Feaster has a list and a plan...and that this is just the first move

I was OK with Feaster giving up his first for a 22 year old two way center of O'Reilly's caliber.
I don't want that first to budge however, for anybody older than that, or less capable than that.

Some of you guys are hilarious. Feaster almost fills the absolute biggest organizational need, something the Flames haven't had in well over a decade -- a young, top flight centre, but somehow it was a bad move?
The fact that the Avs matched should tell you everything you need to know about O'Reilly. They didn't want to let him go, even for our 1st rounder (and 3rd) in a deep draft.
I fully commend Feaster and his staff for actively trying to make this team better. This could've been a huge addition for the Flames and made our future and present instantly brighter. I'm sad the Avs matched.

How long do you think King and Edwards spent giving the go ahead on this deal?

Young, Yes, Top Flight, very debatable.
