What's your opinion? Good, bad, ugly? Lethbridge has gotten a load of grief from a couple of vocal citizens, but they managed to keep the project going. I get the impression it was pretty close to being cancelled.

Love them. Nice crisp white light.

It is a very small minority that does not like them, I don't think there was much danger of the project being canceled.

It went as far as a councillor tabling a resolution to cancel the project. It had some support on council, but not enough to pass, but I think it was about as close as you can get without it actually being cancelled.

Everyday I would drive down University Drive hoping for LED street lights...this morning, LED Lights!

Love em, I was actually just wondering this morning what they look like from a plane flying overhead. Standing on the edge of the coulee looking across to the southside you can't really see the glow.

For those interested, we had one changed right outside our office so IU decided to time how long it took to change it. From the time the guy started lifting the bucket to until the time he jumped out of the bucket after changing the fixture it was 3 MINUTES!

There are a couple of shots from before and after Los Angeles retrofitted about 100,000 of their lights to LED. The before shot:

Spoiler!

The after shot:
Spoiler!

They were able to drastically reduce light pollution. This is why it blows my mind that the greatest resistance to the LED conversion is the RASC. Especially in Lethbridge, they were relentless.

Yep, there was a motion to delay implementation for further study, but it was defeated 7-2. There was/is a small group of vocal opponents but the vast majority of citizens are on board.

Much nicer light, and will apparently save $1m/year in electricity costs to boot.

have you heard or read anything about how long it will take to recoup the costs of the change? Any links?

The cost itself appears to be around $7.5M, but I believe the City was able to access Federal grant money to fund it.

I love it. I don't really understand the opposition. Safer, easier on the eyes, power efficiency, longevity. They did the conversion real quick too, I went back home after being here for 3 weeks and the whole south end was already done.
