Quote:
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A parolee believed to be armed led police in a 3-hour-long, high-speed pursuit through two counties Saturday night before surrendering at the Grapevine.
Authorities said the chase began near Saticoy Street and Corbin Avenue, just north of Tarzana, about 7:50 p.m.
Police said the male driver is on parole and may be a third strike candidate. They also said a female in the car may be his friend or girlfriend. She is not believed to be on parole.
The chase ended at the Grapevine just before 11:30 p.m.
Authorities initially tried to pull over the driver of the dark Hyundai sedan for reckless driving, but the driver fled, traveling through nearly a dozen freeways.
At 10 p.m., all Los Angeles Police Department units disengaged from the pursuit and the California Highway Patrol took over.
Officer Saul Gomez of the CHP said the driver, who drove at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, was throwing objects out of the window.
Gomez said those items were recovered, but could not specify what they were.
The pursuit went south through Hollywood, Pico Rivera; east through the San Gabriel Valley; south and then north through San Bernardino County along the 15 Freeway; and then west again.
The car traveled the 101, 60, 15, 210, 10, 5, 605, 710 and105 freeways. At 10:15 p.m., he was on the northbound 110 freeway toward a congested downtown Los Angeles, where the Los Angeles Galaxy game let out about 9 p.m.
The car model the suspect is believed to have driven gets 24 to 40 miles per gallon on the highway.
A few minutes before 11 p.m., he led police on the northbound 5 Freeway through Castaic. It ended shortly after that without incident.
