Yep, and in that respect you can look at it as a 5 year deal with a penalty for two additional years.

Tofolli didn’t prove last year that he’s still a top line guy. I’m happy with him on the second line with Kadri, but that would leave a gaping hole on our top line. Slotting him on the top line works if we had stronger support on the second line though.

I also don’t think that Coleman should be a) broken up from Backlund b) playing top 6 minutes. I think he clearly will be the weak link of our scoring lines.

The other option is to hope that Pelletier surprises and take that slot.

However, I think the most realistic option is that we move Hanafin+ for a top winger before the season starts.
The Flames have 3 top line players in huberdeau, kadri, and Lindholm, but 7 solid top 6 players with backlund. Who plays with who will come down to chemistry. Huberdeau didn't need to be paired with a top line center to produce at the highest level in Florida. He might be better off with two trigger men and Lindholm might form his own 1B line.

Who knows what will happen. This is a very deep Flames team, and it's very exciting to be a fan right now.

The last time the Flames won the UFA signing season was 2009.

Coming off a 98 pt season (solid 5th spot in the West, 5th playoff year in a row.

They added Bouwmeester to Phanuef, Regher, Sarich and Giordano.

Iginla, Jokininen, Langkow, Kipper

They won the first 5 games of 2009-10 with Gio being 1st star in the first game.

The next playoff game was 2014-15 with Gio the only 2009-10 player left on the roster

If your point is that on paper this team looks good but we don't know how it will come together and we should wait and see before making any grand proclamations, then I agree.

If you point is that this team is the same as the 2009-10 team and will befall the same fate, see your first potential point.

I think getting Markstrom was a pretty massive UFA signing season win and while Tanev maybe didn’t have the fanfare that was a truly amazing pickup.

The 2009 They got the biggest fish by adding a 25 year old former top 3 pick on the blueline. They also let a 39 goal 80pt winger walk to Montreal who wanted to sign here and another top 6 forward in Bertuzzi walk without a replacement.

I also don’t think they won signing season this year as they lost the top UFA on the market and signed the second best available player

Andersson and Hanifin would have to make massive steps, bigger than last year to be in that elite level.

In the case of Hedman and Makar, never

This year's top UFAs were Gaudreau and Kadri

Last year Hamilton and Gruabauer

2020 Pietroangelo and Taylor Hall

2019 Sergei Bobrovsky and Panarin

2018 Tavares and James van Riemsdyk James Neal was top 5

2017 Radulov and Shattenkirk

2016 Okposo Loui Eriksson

A lot more losers than winners and maybe Panarin that lived up to the expectations generated on signing.

Dying on that hill? No. Just making the point that young D aren’t elite until they are. And sometimes it doesn’t happen right away. You are being silly. Pietrangelo wasn’t viewed as elite until he won a cup. That’s the single point.

Will Hanifin or Andersson take another step? Probably not. But it’s possible. Anderson’s progression has been fantastic and Hanifin has always had potential - that’s why he was drafted where he was.

Someone made a thinly veiled racist comment about Kadri “caring too much for his culture” in a different thread but I think this is actually a huge positive for the team - for bringing in new fans, selling merchandise, inspiring young players.

Yes, Kadri cares for his culture (who doesn’t?) and will take the Cup to a Mosque in London which is the first time this has happened. But again, I can only see huge benefits when firsts like this happen.

When I buy my Kadri jersey, it'll mean more to me than any other Flames merch I've purchased.

I'm not even Muslim - I'm just a pumped brown dude. Even if he underperforms, I'll wear that thing with pride.

Huberdeau = Rantanen, Mangiapane = Nichuskin, Backlund > Newhook, Weegar = Toews, Byram = Andersson, Hanifin > Girard, Tofolli = Burakovsky, Markstrom > Keumper. I guess Kadri is the Landeskog in the equation.

Colorado has an edge based on Makar and Mackinnon, but it's not huge.
but then who's the Kadri?!

I'm not sure the bolded is true. Piet played on Team Canada in 2014 and got Norris votes most years after that. STL had decent playoff runs 2/3 yrs before their cup where Piet played 28 mins a night

His reputation certainly levelled up again with the Cup, but anyone paying attention knew he was elite.

Since the Flames haven’t had much playoff success in the last number of decades you could do this with virtually any UFA signing over the period.
