I recall last year some people (probably resident Canuck and Oiler fans) downplayed the Baertschi pick because his age was on the opposite end of the spectrum.
I remember being back in high school and there were always a few kids in my grade that were physically immature. The story behind Jankowski is that he was physically too small to play major junior during his draft year. Last season though, he had a huge growth spurt and major junior teams were trying to recruit him.
At that age, a few months can mean a lot depending on the individual.

Just seems odd that so many people are saying if he was born three days later he'd be a sure-fire early round guy next draft, maybe even first overall, and others say he won't play on the team for five years.

Most top 10 picks are either ready or a year or 2 away from making the NHL? Really?
I find that hard to belive. Prove it.

?
If the argument is that he would be top 10 in next years draft then 3 years counting from now is the equivalent of the latter part of your 1-2 years. The fact that he's planning on pursuing the collegiate route stretches out the time table some. Keep in mind he's only 17 and is coming from a program outside the norm he'll need additional time to adjust to the pro-schedule moreso then the guys who go through Major Junior.

Why not include the 13 games he played in the MPHL?
I dunno, We'll see how he compares better next year when we have some data from Dubuque. This is very much a scouting pick, if the eval on the skills is right it's a home run if it's not then it's a black eye on Feaster, Button, and Weis brod. We'll see.

I don't mind the gamble.. They are all gambles in my opinion. I hope they are right on this one.. We need some of our picks to start panning out for us. Sieloff I think was a good pick in the 2nd.. Good player.. So lets time tell.. Oh an btw if the flames brass truly felt that he be around in the 2nd they would of grabbed him then however teams must of been hovering around this guy

Let me ask you this.
What if Ryan Murray and Nail Yakupov were not approximately 11 months older than the list of players you just mentioned? Would they have gone one and two in the draft? That timespan may not seem like a great deal of time, but for some of the kids it will prove to be everything. Just look at the growth a player like Baertschi made this past season, or the growth Yakupov made over this last year alone.
I think his age absolutely plays a huge factor in this for two reasons
1. He has the greater potential to physically improve his strength and add weight to his large frame.
2. He has the least amount exposure to high level coaching and training.
Let's face it, high school prep hockey does not offer you the same opportunities to learn and develop as a player when compared to the CHL or junior divisions in Europe. For the first time next season he will be playing in a proven hockey program that has produced some extremely high end talent in the past few season's.
When you add those factors in with the raw skillset he posses who's to say just how good this kid can be in a years time.
And, yes. I completely understand that their is a risk that he will not progress as we all hope he will.

So he's going to Dubuque next year and then off to Providence College? What is Dubuque then? Why not go right into Providence College?

He's doing a year in the USHL, which a lot of College players do before heading right into their college team. The only reason this seems odd is because of his late birthday. If he was born a little later he would have been drafted right out of the USHL from Dubuque.
Lots of players do a year in the USHL before going onto their College teams, it's a good first step. Flames draftee John Gaudreau did it last year.

Two things...
First is the style of play that the coach employs in Dubuque. It emphasizes 2 way play but allows for the skilled guys to hone their craft.
2. The kid simply isnt physically ready for top flight NCAA competition. Yes he is 6'3", but he has just recently got that size, and still needs to get used to it as well as fill out and get some weight on.
Its becoming a relatively common route for younger guys now...play a year in the USHL and develop their skills while retaining college eligibility.

Here is an article from the Dubuque Fighting Saints website.

A record six players from the USHL were taken in the first round of the draft. Jankowski was the only incoming USHL player taken in the first round.

“Mark is a tremendous young hockey talent,” Montgomery said. “He is going to be the first player in the USHL that was drafted in the first round that comes and plays in our league. Mark is going to be someone that takes the fans out of their seats when they watch him play next year.”
|
This isn't set in stone or anything, Jankowski can still go onto College with Providence if he chooses or now that he's been drafted by a CHL team make the move their. The USHL seems likely though.
Also it's a little more rare a player gets drafted and plays in the USHL for one more year but it does happen. Joe Pavelski was drafted by the Sharks in 2003 and played in the USHL for one more year.

Also, Jankowski didnt get drafted into the OHL from bantam, and likely woud have gone that route had he been...but he was 5' 6" at the time and all of 140 lbs....so he was overlooked because of it.

Yup, exactly. Fans of opposing teams can harp on the fact we bring up his younger age but.. it's true. The kid is genuinely a late bloomer and his later birth year compacts the "issue". Jankowski was on no ones radar two years ago but he continued to get better even as he grew into an awkward large size.
If Mark would have had this growth from 14-15 he would have been drafted by an OHL team. Instead he had it later and is still growing into that frame.
He's very much a project but there is certainly reason to be optimistic about this pick. It's hard to doubt his skill.

If you include the 13 games in the MPHL his ppg goes to 1.76.

Well just look at the last couple drafts.
From 2011, 4 of the top ten spent the whole season with their team, another 2 made their debuts and looked good, will likely stick this season. The one's who didn't play will likely debut this year.
From 2010, 4 of the top ten have already played between 125 and 150 games, another 4 have played 60 +, and another 1 is a slam dunk prospect to play this season (Granlund). So that's 9/10 that are NHL-ready within 1-2 years.
From 2009, the top 4 have all played over 200 games, and only Scott Glennie has yet to appear as an NHL regular... again, 9/10 players NHL-ready within 2-3 years.
