What was the rumor back in the day?
Sutter wanted Thornton for Kobasew and Leopold
Boston wanted Regehr instead of Leopold
Sutter wouldn't do it
If Eichel is available and you aren't going to rebuild, pay the price FFS

This is about out bidding the rest of the league for a 24 year old superstar Center who can score from 80 feet away.
And Everything we’d give up, we could replace.
You can’t find Eichels.

I feel confident it’s happening. And while I understand the interest in trading him, I think it would be a big positive statement to have an American star sign his second long term contract with the team.

I would be interested, but excited is not the right word for me. I would hope for it to be successful, but this path is not my first choice.

My goodness... people want a star player and when there is one available won't give up the price to get it due to being afraid of failure. Guess what, this team is going to be a big failure under the same group of guys. If Tkachuk has the same year he had this year, we are going to be wishing we traded him for Eichel (assuming there was a trade centered around him) This is going to be Mark Stone all over again except worse.
What's the worst case scenario? Eichel is a massive failure and we have to rebuild? Thank god, force it upon the ownership.
Eichel is probably one of the only pieces available that could change the dynamic of this group. Johnny having Eichel on his line would improve his play substantially. Monahan slotted on the 2nd line and Backlund 3rd line? Sign me up. Losing some prospects and picks will potentially hurt, but if we really want a chance to win without rebuilding, this is the play.
Go watch some highlights of the guy, we have had nothing close to his caliber since Iginla. I would instantly buy an Eichel jersey.

Taking a while to get to 5000

^^ Right?!? So many are expecting Eichel to step right in if he's acquired. He's gone for like 6 months to a year. You get Eichel you best be ready to wait a while.

That's why you keep Monahan until Eichel can step in.

He likely misses most of the year (if not all), AND we give up our 1st next year

Yup, we shouldn't take the gamble of paying for Eichel because it might ruin this pristine bubble of mediocrity we've had going here.
I was basically at the point of wanting massive trades just to make trades and get a different look in here because the previous mix was apathy inducing.
But at least gambling on Eichel has a potential huge upside to it. There is absolutely justification in this team being where it is pursuing that. In fact, we would be resigning to toiling in bubble team hell for the foreseeable future if we didn't try.
And if it busts, bring on that sweet rebuild and the renewed hope that comes with it.

The Flames just have no areas of strength to trade from for Eichel. He will come I over and have replacement level players to play with. Then when he misses half the season from injuries, and 1st rounder Buffalo gets could easily become a franchise player. I hope the people wising for Eichel aren’t doing it with a monkey claw they bought at some flea market in Arabia.

Not really - you’re gambling that he’s going to be alright.
But you’re also gambling that you’ll be able to accomplish anything by perpetually drafting 12th-18th.
Eichel is the better gamble.

So we lose a mid-1st round pick - this roster has a ceiling, but it also isn’t anywhere close to the worst team in the league.
The Brooklyn Nets paid Kevin Durant $40M to recover from Achilles surgery- I think that worked out for them.

Last reported, Buffalo wants 4 future pieces for Eichel.
Obviously we have to make the money work and trade someone off the roster, but you're no longer talking about dealing two guys from our top six just to bring him in.
It would be largely non roster pieces. Meaning he would have guys to play with if he theoretically did come over.
And who cares about next year? This is a bigger scope deal. And do you really think we'll be bad enough to get in the top 2-3?
We had some of the worst performances we've seen from this group this season and we picked 13th. We're not outsucking the true lottery teams.

If that's the case you need to get Mittelstadt thrown in, to cover until he is healthy.

I heard a surgeon on the radio or tv a while back saying that if he gets the artificial disk surgery that he wants, the minimum time for recovery before resuming average activity is 8-12 weeks. Walking would be about the most strenuous thing allowed during this time.
Then it would be another while before contact and such would be allowed though he could start skating. So ballparking that, he could be back around the end of November/mid December. More likely sometime in January.
And all that is contingent on no complications.

If that happens, it happens. You think if we don't trade for Eichel this team is going to be picking in the lottery? Its going to be a similar team as the last few years fighting to get into the playoffs. Eichel is a franchise player and I'd argue he has a higher chance of creating success for this franchise than a draft pick that we hope turns out to be good. How many draft picks have the Flames had that can truly be given the tag "franchise player"
