What you call modern phenomena is just a political ideology that has been around for decades flaring up and magnified by social media.
But I'll cop to being old - old enough to recognize that the tactics employed by identarian ideologues are the same tactics used by religious conservatives back when I fought with them in my youth: a bunch of true believers who have heard the Word treating their desperately simplistic worldview as a universal truth, and trying to shame everyone else into conforming to it. I'll no more resign myself to identarian dogma being the new normal than I'd resign myself to young people turning collectively to Mormonism and trying to impose their views on everyone else.

That vast majority of people in 'marginalized groups' don't give a #### about cultural appropriation. They have more serious things to worry about, like getting an education, paying for their homes, and funding their retirement. The amount of handwringing progressives indulge in over pop culture and representation is a testament to how out of touch they are with the concerns of average people.
Don't mistake the bugbears of a handful of academics and journalists for the sentiments of the groups they claim to represent. You have to be remarkably privileged (or lacking in life experience) for Halloween costumes, sports mascots, or the gender of superheroes to crack the top-10 of your social concerns.

I do find this weird because as an Asian girl I wear Western clothes everyday.
Not only here, in Asia too people wear western clothes. Is it inappropriate for Asians to wear a white wedding dress?
Another example is food. A guy at my work said he doesn't like Chinese food so whenever anyone invites him to a Chinese restaurant he politely declines. He's being called racist.
I think you should be allowed to not like a culture's food.

You don't even have to be that old. This was still the tone during the 2000 election and the first Bush administration. Probably the biggest political disillusionment I have experienced was the transition from my undergrad days, thinking "if we could only get the public to swing a but farther left, we could outvote these bible-thumping, gay-bashing, pro-life-and-if-the-mother-dies-that-was-her-choice, gun toting self-righteous ideologues and enter a new political age of reason, evidence and civil disagreement on logical grounds."
It turns out the problem wasn't the conservative ideology that held away back then, the problem was people. This is just how people are. This is what they do with the power conferred by being a part of the moral majority. It's a seriously depressing realization.

Came in wondering what in the world Peterson was talking about now that's got folks (still? again?) talking about him.
Left disappointed.

It's super PC sometimes. Another food story. In the elevator going up a group of people (not from my company) were coming back from lunch. A couple of guys were asking another guy, so what did you think of your first Korean food experience? He replied "I thought it was decent but I found the Kim Chi kind of gross".
Silence...
Then they looked at me.
Then one of the two guys apologized to me. A total stranger.
You're allowed to find Kim Chi gross.

What kind of psycho “PC” place do you work at? I’ve literally never even seen that level of PC and I’m a leftisonian tribesperson recently out of university who works for a progressive company and is in a sexual minority.

It's like being part of a desperate band of zombie apocalypse survivors who have driven away a horde of the undead from the town, and then turning to your allies in satisfaction, only to see them shuffling toward you with arms outstretched moaning "b-r-a-i-n-s".

Those weren't my co-workers. They were from another company on another floor.
You guys should experiment saying stuff in elevators

I’m still concerned about why your actual co-workers are calling someone racist for not liking Chinese food. That doesn’t even make sense.

Except now gay zombies can marry and pregnant zombies can have abortions. So, still a more just zombie apocalyose. Seems like progress, imperfect though it may be.

Also, disliking kimchi may not be racist but it is troubling nonetheless.

In an attempt to get this thread somewhat back on topic...
Wilfrid Laurier professor withdraws from free speech task force in protest
Quote:
Liberal arts associate professor David Haskell stepped aside Thursday after learning that the university is demanding $5,473 for unspecified “security costs” for a Lindsay Shepherd-organized free-speech event.
She of course is the teaching assistant who was subjected to a disgraceful browbeating last fall by two of her professors and a bureaucrat for daring to show an excerpt of Jordan Peterson debating gender identity.
The three labelled her “transphobic” because she didn’t first denounce Peterson’s views before showing the clip.
In the wake of that experience, Shepherd formed The Laurier Society for Open Inquiry (LSOI), with the goal of bringing controversial speakers and events to campus.
With at least one event thwarted by the pulling of a fire alarm and another put on hold because of exorbitant security cost demands from another university, LSOI is now planning to bring Dr. Frances Widdowson, associate professor of political science at Calgary’s Mount Royal University, next week.
|
Quote:
“I’m removing myself until Wilfrid Laurier rescinds this policy. I’m willing to keep working on this (the task force business), but not now.”
What concerns Haskell and McNally – and others – is that because most campus protests and “disruptions” as they are sometimes called, come from left-leaning faculty and students, charging costs back to speakers and organizers means right-leaning organizations are essentially being taxed.
As Haskell put it, “The policy is clearly prejudicial to clubs, faculty and associations that want to bring right-leaning speakers on campus. Now there’s a fee, but it’s not a fee left-leaning groups will ever pay.”
There is a growing body of evidence which shows that where once, right and left-leaning groups protested equally (and that off-campus right-wing groups are sometimes violent and threatening), recently, most of the disinvitations (where pressure mounts to un-invite a speaker) and serious disruptions come from the left.
As the economics professor McNally told the Post, the policy “is massively biased.”
“Academic rightwingers don’t threaten violence, so this is like taxing people who want to hear these points of view.”
