You really can't make #### like this up, Hollywood couldn't script this.....it just oilers.
You can count me firmly in the camp of they don't deserve McDavid, but this is just a big LOL! This will make them better, because they would need to find a how new level of stench to outright ruin McDavid. I hope their management remains intact and that their buffoonery and related cap issues will cast them as underachievers for the inconceivable # of top picks they have "earned" for years to come.
We've seen this movie before (just with a worse cast), day 1 of Edmonton's best three days of the year is past, they will remain giddy until Day2 ,the draft, and then be downright delusional through the summer, leading up to Day 3, opening day, at which time the rollercoaster begins it treacherous decent at breakneck speeds. Rinse and repeat annually.

Basically Edmonton keep taking advantage of a "draft loop hole.." In the NHL Players get called for tripping, coaches, fined, players suspended; Yet Edmonton "which admits to taking" continues to tank every year. How is this fair to other teams that need franchise players in order grow in other markets. Something needs to be done.

Its like when Crosby and the Pens destroyed Calgary this year...but it happening 80% time versus the freaking Oilers...

yeah, good times, that...
Everyone keeps bringing up Crosby, which is natural as he was the most recent "Generational Talent", but here's another name: Steve Yzerman.

Yzerman gets overshadowed by playing at the same time as Gretzky, but make no mistake, he was an immense talent, ending up the 7th all time leading scorer in NHL history.

Now people with shorter memories may say, "The Wings were perennial cup contenders, so why should that make me feel better?" Because it overlooks the fact that Yzerman didn't make his first cup finals until his 12th season, and didn't win his 1st cup until his 14th season. In the first 11 seasons of his career, Yzerman made it past the first round of the playoffs twice.

No, Steve Yzerman and his generational talent didn't turn around an NHL franchise. Instead, an NHL franchise that had been wasting Steve Yzerman and his generational talent finally turned itself around - it added the greatest coach in NHL history, Scotty Bowman, generational defensemen in Paul Coffey and Nick Lidstrom, a Hart Trophy caliber second centre in Fedorov, solid veterans like Viacheslav Fetisov, Vladimir Konstantinov, Larionov, the original Grind Line, etc.

When Edmonton can add all of that, I'll start to worry about them being perennial contenders who annually crush Calgary. But for now, the only question IMO is: "Is McDavid talented enough to simply put out the dumpster fire and leave it a standard mess, or will he get consumed by it?"

These two are the results of good scouting , both 4th rounders hardly top draft picks , just good ones.

Just a question with McJesus in Dedmonton, who is going to trade them 3-4 NHL caliber Defensemen as has been suggested ?
Trade deadline showed us that there is a premium on D-men ?
Man I hated Gretz back in the day , nothing personal Connor but Oil=Suck !
LOL I totally Mact'd that compared McJesus to Gretz

I watched the video and 2 balls def came up the tube on the first push. Only 1 ball on the subsequent pushes. Not sure it matters, but will cause controversy.

Had you counted the second ball that came up, Buffalo would have won, however it is explained that only one ball can come up every 10 seconds.

For those that care to watch: http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?id=810726

I'd be all for changing that lottery crap. Would rather enjoy something like loser playoffs where, say, the 8 teams with the worst records face off in best of 3 series and the winner of the tournament gets 1st overall. Of course it's never going to happen though, but I think it'd be a neat idea.

No, that's how that style of lottery machine works. The stopper is at the top, but it doesn't prevent multiple balls from being sucked up the tube when it's opened.

I just searched "lottery drawing" on YouTube and this was the first result:

You can see more than one ball gets sucked up the tube, but it's only the first ball that counts.

Or just look at Tavares. When drafted HE was predicted to be the next Crosby, had some good seasons with the Islanders, but the team was still mired in crap and did nothing until they finally fixed their goaltending and defense. Now look at Edmonton with an even worse defense and goaltending situation than what the Islanders had to work with and tell me how one young forward is supposed to fix that

The only way McDavid becomes a true threat in this league is if MacTavish can trade for multiple top 4 defencemen and a true #1 goalie, because they've been unable to draft any (save potentially Nurse). And going by MacT's moves since taking over in Edmonton, I'm not really worried about that

Really great post by Mike F, everyone is understandably pissed off right now but one player does not a Championship team make no matter how talented he is.

To me it boils down to this:

If McDavid doesn't have a coach teaching him systems and drills that involve back-checking, how will he utilize his generational talent and become a generational player?

I just think its fantastic how excited they all are.

"You just crapped the bed for 9 years and have a godawful team and are likely going to crap the bed again next year and on top of all of that you're the laughing-stock of professional sport let alone the NHL."

"Doesnt matter, 5 cups and McDavid!!! LULZ!!! ZOMG!!!"

Oilers gonna Oil.

So instead of the teams most needing help, you will instead pretty much guarantee the top picks go to mediocre teams instead?

Sorry, but no. The fact that the Oilers are historically awful is no reason to make a knee-jerk change to a patently awful draft system.

What may happen - if league execs are as angry about the Oilers getting yet another top pick as has been indicated - is that they might put in a rule limiting the number of #1 picks a team can get in a set period of time. But there will not be any stupidly radical alterations.

we were able to do it even with talent that was not highly rated (ie Brodie and Gaudreau).... it stands to reason the more high picks you have, especially number one picks, that you will turn it around.

calgary has done just that with low draft picks

give a person enough lottery tickets and eventually they will win the lottery...edmonton can't ruin every single player they touch ad infinitum

I wonder if there's every been a more universally loathed team amongst all hockey fans than the oilers right now? From reading other forums, it truly will be them against the world for the foreseeable future.

I used to wish that the rivalry would come back but I find myself instead thinking it's too bad that they didn't relocate in the 90s when there was a very real chance of it. Maybe there is still hope... if any fan base deserves it, it's them.

Speaking only for myself, I would be surprised if the Oilers made the playoffs next season. Still too many holes as the team stands, particularly on defence and goaltending. Maybe they can trade their other 1st round selection and another player for a top 2 defenseman, it would help but they are still not playoff contenders yet obviously.

I just watched the MacT TSN interview. I'm pretty sure he doesn't plan on trading any of their kids.

MacTavish has already told Hall/RNH/Eberle/Yak in no uncertain terms that they will not be traded and that he isnt even entertaining offers on the 1st overall pick.

Then again, he also thinks the Oilers made the playoffs in 2008 and that they were better this year than last year.

That man's brain is like a bag of cats.
