Amazing draft by the Flames

Baertschi, Granlund, Wotherspoon, Gaudreau, and Brossoit
We flip Brossoit for Smid so every player from that draft essentially will have suited up for us this year.

And even Brossoit, though it was just to be a body on the bench, has already been called up with the Oilers once this season, so now every one will have had a taste of the NHL in some form now. That's some pretty astronomical odds to go 5 for 5 in a draft.

EDIT: just looking back, probably our second best draft for efficiency, especially if Brossoit ends up playing a game at some point. We've had a few drafts with 6 players and 2 with 7 players going on to play games in the NHL, but in those years we still had quite of few misses.

Best one probably 1992, 7 out of 11 players drafted ended up playing NHL games, Stillman ended up with over 1000, and Svehla and Hoglund both ended up with over 500.

Our wonderful new GM got 12 games from 2 players out of 9 draftees from that year. hell lets add 2010 as well and make it a bakers dozen for 16 drafted players.

Meanwhile the fired GM has got 96 games and counting out of 11 draftees plus Smid.

Is there a worst drafting GM than Brian Burke?

Got the dates wrong. Still, 150 at that height ? Compact and strong can do some damage. Actually backs up my Theo says hi.

it looked intense for him when he was on the ice, looked like he was overwhelmed. Not necessarily a bad thing, he probably thinks very quickly

Re: comparisons to fleury, I do see some similarities actually. Mostly in stick handling and ability to keep the puck away from opponent despite not having much reach. Puck on a string type stuff.

I get what you are saying. But does Feaster get credit for letting Button and the scouts do their job at that draft?

Probably has to get the same amount of credit/blame as any other GM. They all have scouting staffs.

Yeah, the one we just fired. 2011 where he let Button run the draft was a good one, but Jay Feasters draft track record is a complete joke.

Wait, are you counting Smid's games played in that or do you just mean he also got Smid? Regardless, at this point how does games played mean anything, given the caliber of the team you were drafting for also impacts games played.

If we are going to play him with Byron... might as well just go full tilt. Switch out Arnold for Cammy and throw Cundari and Russell on D - the ankle biters.

GM's don't draft, scouts do. GM's can have influence on 1st round picks if they want but a lot of them leave it up to their scouting department.

Yeah, I'm sure it varies from team-to-team on how much influence a GM has. We've seen Feaster talk about his time in Tampa Bay saying he wanted beef at one point and really messed up the drafting there. We've heard Tod Button speak how the Flames shifted towards players with skill and smarts above all in more recent years as well,

Scouts do the scouting, but GM's form how that draft list will shape up ultimately.

During his drafts in Calgary Feaster seemed to set the focus on smart hockey players above all and then let the scouts develop a list off that focus for example.

1984 had a few more misses but it was such a ridiculous draft especially drafting outside the top 10 that it needs to be mentioned

I believe it was Sutter actually. In the 2010 draft, all the prospects were smart - Button was commenting post-draft on this.

I don't think Feaster set any mandates or focus, other than the mandate was "form your list, be sure about it, and select from it regardless of how big or small or what position", which in itself is a very good mandate for an experienced scouting staff.

Pretty certain Feaster made such a mandate along with Weisbrod. There are interviews with said quotes. don't ask me to find them though. But he did also say he will put his trust in the scouting department to do their jobs and make the best list possible.
