It's been suggested that this is a "good will tax" that developers pay to buy a smoother planning process. Not only is such a concept absurd, it's also offensive. I asked a couple large land developers whether the motivation for negotiating in the community and rec portion of the acreage assessment was for "good will" - I got very puzzled looks. The answer was no - if we can't get things like fire halls built, we have no new community development - the City has to pay for it somehow.

I kind of assumed this was the case, but didn't know for sure.
Just to clarify, what would happen if this 'voluntary' $4300 money was not paid? Could the community still be built with reduced services?
If so, what would the downside for the residents be? You mention Fire Stations, which doesn't seem very optional to me.

Ballots cast at the poll in Knob Hill this afternoon. Nenshi, Woolley and Hehr got my votes.

Woolley released a poll suggesting it's a dead heat in 8. Surprised there'd be such a high undecided so close to election and in a race with an incumbent.

I am not sure what to think of Woolley. I did met him yesterday as he canvassed our neighborhood. We were replacing the windows in my house at the time and I told him it would be guaranteed votes if he stayed and helped me. He said his threshold was at least 15 votes, I could only speak for two so he left.
I honestly would have loved to chat with him more to get an idea of what he is about.
I am not sure why but I don't really like Mar that much, maybe it is the fat ties and small dogs? Would Evan be a decent Councillor? Anybody have opionons they want to share? I think my vote is open at this point.

The other thing is that I think to really, unseat an incumbent in this election the challenger is going to need AT least a 5-7% advantage over the incumbent in polls heading into election. With no real challenger to Nenshi, I can see at least 5% of the voter population selecting incumbents just because they haven't been paying attention.

I know him personally and I think he is a good guy and his heart is in the right place. He is a big Nenshi backer ... so anything Nenshi says or does - Woolley will be right behind him. I think he would make a good alderperson but...
I think his political leanings are further left than I like and he seems to be an idealog
I live in Ward 8 and the issue has always been that there is no one candidate who represents the wide range of residents - John Mar has never been like that and Wooley isn't either. Both candidates have their targeted audiences.
To me his is just another Druh clone.

Ward 8 is quite interesting. Today it surfaced that John Mar had a text sent to everyone on the Mission Possible list, which was originally for coordinating and supporting flood relief efforts. It wasn't entirely well received (for some reason people who gave their information for flood relief purposes aren't pleased to get spammed a couple months later!)
I better digress to mention that Mar himself didn't get this done, but there are a number of ties to his campaign and Mission Possible. His campaign manager, Donn Lovett and who knows how many others. Its an direct link between the two.
So the text went out, and then later today (as it became obvious that it wasn't kosher), Mar came out and declined their support. I'm not sure how you can get the toothpaste back in the tube here, but that's what they're trying.
I wonder if the internal polls for Mar are showing this tighter than they care to admit? To me, a stunt like that reeks of desperation because Mar and his team know full well that this was somewhat risky. They just have to. But if the poll mentioned above is as close as described, maybe they took that risk. Interesting to watch for a political junkie!

Are there any articles about this Ward 8 stuff Slava? Kind of missed a lot of the election action over the weekend.

So two members of the Mission Possible board have very close ties to Mar's campaign, very fishy that they decided to do this without any input from Mar (allegedly).
I feel like it is really hard to gauge what the trend is in a few wards (mine included), hearing all this hubbub out of Ward 8 makes me really curious for this time next week (once the polls start reporting).

Nothing wrong with that, at least Ripley went with a face to face conversation about his offer, unlike the CBE candidate Trina Hrudman, who wrote that email to one of her competitors just asking for her to withdraw from the race (and not even endorse her, just drop out completely).
Now does Ripley or Dowhan have polling information that triggered this? I thought I saw some reports late last week indicating some strong momentum for Ripley's campaign, perhaps that had something to do with him coming forward to Dowhan and making the request?

Is there any place to see who is "winning" a particular ward based on polls? I have already placed my vote for councillor, but I am curious to know what the race is looking like. I live in Ward 1.
Obviously, polling has many limitations (as has been seen in recent elections), but it would be interesting to see what sort of race is happening.

If you read Dowhan's facebook post it reads as if Ripley was approaching him because he was behind in the polls (Ripley's information) and Dowhan must have had a reasonable third place showing.
As a Ward 2 resident, I can't see that 'vote-split' logic, because I don't see a Dowhan voter translating automatically or even disproportionately into a Ripley voter.

That CBE trustee "issue" is hilarious to me. Of course she asked her to withdraw; that kind of thing is completely common and isn't some kind of under-handed tactic or anything terrible. Hurdman wants to win and she knows that to do that she has a far better chance if its her against the incumbent head-to-head. I get that Misty Hamel was surprised t be asked to step aside, and I also know that Hurdmans response on the radio should've been phrased better, but its far from shocking in the grand scheme of things.
Candidates have put hours and hours into these things. While there are a lot of people who "have never seen a candidate doing a darn thing", believe me, its not for lack of trying! They've almost certainly stood on hundreds/thousands of door steps, spent a bunch of their own money and recruited friends and neighbours to help. They all want to win. If a candidate can convince another to drop out and throw their support behind them because they represent the same views it gives them a better chance. In my opinion if a candidate doesn't try to get the others out of the race or discourage them from running they aren't doing their job!

I get that its a secret ballot....but honest question, what's the difference if I tweet a photo of my marked ballot or the same tweet that says "I just voted for Jesse Jackson!" ?

Agree 100%. This does not cast Carra into Monster status not worthy of votes.
