They brought it up on the Sportsnet panel. But yeah, it was mostly the die hard fans who knew before that.
The average fan just wants a team that wins and is entertaining to watch.

Because their colleague Francis is giving them some fat to chew on
Really. If it was worth mentioning prime time Elliotte would have . It’s local time , filler time

Maybe you're right anyways. At the end of the day nothing matters, nobody cares, and we're all going to die.

I would consider myself a diehard. I don't check Sportsnet daily though unless I hear about something. I'm not from Calgary so I wouldn't hear anything on the radio either but I don't listen to the radio even here.
There's also the people too who switch it to another channel during the intermission and would have missed it. I can't remember if I did but I usually zone out during intermissions and it's just background noise.

To me, the only really bad thing about the Maloney interviews is why the Flames felt the need to have them. Just stay quiet, and no one would be debating whether what he was saying was the organizational direction or not.

It’s seems it’s still hard to talk about this issue in anything besides a binary REBUILD / NON REBUILD way. Which has lead to a lot of bad-faith arguments.
A) The Flames aren’t doing everything can to try to make the playoffs.
B) Ownership and top management do not want a long rebuild, and they don’t want to finish bottom-five.
A seems obviously true. And there are enough sources claiming that B is true that it’s credible to many fans.
So anyone interested in good-faith discussion about the strategic direction of the team should focus on B, and whether’s it’s a good approach for the team to take. Should the Flames follow a deliberate strategy of pursuing multiple top-5 picks over the next three seasons?

Taking a while to get to 5000

It’s like they see themselves as a Colorado type (kind of). One down year, grab a top pick, right back to being (or thinking they are) contenders.

So according to Pat Steinberg this is what happened. Eric Francis reached out to the Flames and asked if Maloney would do this interview at the quarter mark of the season, and could give some insight into what the plan is for the Flames, which they agreed. Around the same time Sportsnet asked if Conroy could give an on air interview as we haven't heard from him really this year. The Flames said since Maloney is already doing the other interview he can just do both, and Maloney likes doing interviews.
Then the first interview on Thursday went really poorly compared to what the media expected. They really were trying to just make people feel better about the rest of the season with the poor start, and give them hope. But there was a lot of backlash and it had the complete opposite effect after Maloney went on air with his answers.
Eric Francis had already completed the interview that was released the last few days prior to this on air interview. And he reached out to the Flames and offered to just pull the interview and have them do another interview at a later time, to cool the temperature in the fan base and to see if they wanted to send a diffent message instead. But the Flames said no, the interview they gave is exactly what the message is and they want that to be released.
That is basically the summary of it. So the Flames upper management or whoever is in charge of this was completely fine with this going out, and did not think it would anger the fans.
Steinberg also said on a good note, that from everything he has heard from his sources Craig is likely to get extended. And he also said even if this is the message now he has heard there has been a lot of internal debates behind the scenes recently. So he said while a retool is the plan today and the interview is likely the real plan today, at least behind the scenes things could change in the next few months and they could go to a plan B.

I think that was basically what Friedman said. It was a mistake in his mind to do that interview at this time

Go do it in public, take a video. Go stand downtown and let your heart go out to everyone for five minutes like Musk did.

Rhett's right about that (yes, he's still antagonistic, but he IS right about this). Since the Francis interview mostly, the public seems to have "noticed". Can't say there was much before that...and the first DM appearance on the game didn't do it...but lots more people saw the Francis piece. That's stirred up some degree of sentiment in a lot of the Flames' base.

He said it on Overtime, after one of the callers ranted. Just wanted it cleared up why the interview happened this week.
And he wanted to make it clear that yes the optics look really bad and he understands the frustration from all the callers, but from what he has heard this plan can change. If the Flames keep losing etc things may change.

Speaking of Trump, did you see his tweet about the Flames
Just finished listening to the DISASTROUS interview from “Dumb Dumb” Don Maloney (everyone calling him that!). He has NO IDEA how to run a hockey team — failed BIG in Arizona, failing even BIGGER in Calgary. Total embarrassment!
And Murray “Middle Man” Edwards — what a LOSER. ZERO success since becoming principal owner. Single-handedly DESTROYED a once-great franchise. Team in LAST PLACE but still refuses to REBUILD! Can you believe it???
The FAKE NEWS @Sportsnet won’t say it, but everyone knows — Calgary fans DESERVE BETTER. Hand the keys to the VERY RESPECTED Craig Conroy and let him rebuild through the BIG, BEAUTIFUL DRAFT. He’ll do tremendous things!!!
MAKE THE FLAMES GREAT AGAIN!!!
