For everyone wanting Vladar to be given more games and perhaps become our #1 going forwards this season, you guys do realize that he has a 2.76 GAA vs 2.80 GAA for Markstrom and a .906 Save % vs a .894 Save % for Markstrom.
That’s literally only marginally better. We’re not going anywhere with either of those two. The only place we’re going is #14-16 on the draft board…for the next 3-4 years.

Ya send him to Sweden to fix whatever is going on with Kylington.
At least be useful.

Well if you would actually watch the games instead of bumpinig 2 year old threads you would see Vladar has been way more reliable than Markstrom.....

Sutter is too much of a stubborn prick to allow that. The whole ####ing world can see Markstrom plays much better when he is rested but Sutter has to play him until he falters even thou Vladar is one of the best goalies in the league.

The man is stubborn and certainly can be a prick. Tunnel vision to the extreme, sees the game one way only.

Numbers don’t lie.
Put Vladar in for the same number of games as Markstrom and the results will just about be the same. Would he be a tad bit more reliable? Sure, but he’s definitely not leading us to the promise land, I’ll tell you that much.

0.12 is a massive difference in goaltending save percentage.
Vladar also has faced tougher competition and only gets sporadic starts where it's hard to get into a rhythm.

To me the save percentage splits are telling this year:
Tied:
Markstrom- .894
Vladar- .912
Trailing:
Markstrom: .920
Vladar: .954
Leading:
Markstrom: .874
Vladar: .872
Within 1:
Markstrom: .887 (37 of 39 goalies that have played 600 or more minutes)
Vladar: .908
Markstrom has been brutal when the Flames are tied, or leading, or within 1. Vladar has also struggled when leading but steady in all other situations.
When your $6M goalie has an .887 save percentage when the game is within 1 goal youre going to struggle. Hes the biggest issue with the team this year and it's not close.

Apparently to some save % doesn't matter and overrated stat. And no GioforPm I'm not calling you out you still haven't provided a good reason as to why save % don't matter.

looks like markstrom is pedestrian until he ****s up and we fall behind, then he smartens up
maybe he ought to try smartening up before we blow leads

I agree, but to play devil's advocate, it is my understanding that Markstrom's goals save above expected per 60 is only only pretty bad (0.086), and is higher than Vladar's (-0.082).
It would be interesting to see what Wolf's goals save above expected per 60 is in the AHL. I wouldn't doubt it if it's above 0.75, which is huge.

Hoping this is finally the straw that breaks the camel's back. I honestly don't understand what Sutter sees in Markstrom. This guy is beyond overrated. He wasn't good in 2021 minus the start, is no damn good this season and even last season, I wasn't particularly impressed which is saying a lot since he finished as a runner up for the Vezina. Personally, I thought he was just a product of the team's strong defensive systems. Most of his shutouts felt like team shutouts and that final performance against the Oilers was just putrid.
I hate to be so harsh on him since he seems like a nice guy, but the NHL is a cruel world. Fans demand wins and Markstrom isn't the guy for the job. Vladar is the superior goaltender and I'm surprised Darryl hasn't recognized that because he's usually on point with who's performing and who isn't. Enough of the favouritism already though. Go with the guy who gives you the best chance to win.

Apropos of nothing, Cam Talbot has a better GAA and Save % than Markstrom in three of the last four seasons.

I'm re-posting myself from the game thread, to this more pertinent thread.
per naturalstattrick:
Markstrom is 60th, in High Danger Save Percentage. He's played 30 games. That's 1/2 a season in a #1's normal season of gp. That's the data set, and that's who he is this season.
We are so fortunate to have a 3rd goalie, in the second best league in the world, whom is dominating said league. Call-up Wolf, and give him a shot.

Can't really compare #1 and backup like that. One starts 80% of games, the other comes in to relief late in the game often when it's already over, or starts 2nd of back to back, or gets to play after riding the pine for 2 weeks straight. In the few games I've watched this season I thought the team has looked much better with Vladar in net.

Depends on what you consider to be "marginally better." Based on the math, it looks like Markstrom would have given up 10 less goals if he was at .906 this season.
Where would this team be in the standings with 10 less goals against?
