Except tryouts can't last multiple days or multiple weeks,
And you can play travel expenses for tryouts but not pay the player.
Also if they weren't doing anything wrong, why did CFL officials go in and tell them to stop doing it last week.

Ok sure, but the league hasn't even said anything yet. We don't even know for sure what happened. Maybe the league just said ok that's enough, stop or we will close the loophole. Or maybe the Riders will face huge fines, lost picks and suspensions. I have no idea. But that's kinda my point. How is it possible that not a single reputable source and not a single league official has commented on this yet to provide clarity on what happened and what, if any, the consequences are? I've seen a single league comment. A single sentence. We are aware of the incident (or something similar). But it was hilariously short.
This whole 2 day unraveling has been filled with a ton of misinformation, hearsay and bad journalism and reporting. Everyone has just been tweeting the first rumour they hear with no back up.

@TSNDaveNaylor: CFL delivers what is believed to be largest fine in CFL history on Saskatchewan for roster violations -- $60K. Plus $26K off the 16 Sal cap.

@TSNDaveNaylor: CFL found 'Riders practiced with ineligible players, players on injured list and free agents. All against league policy. #cfl #riders

This decision was made after Commissioner Jeffrey L. Orridge and the CFL completed a thorough investigation, spanning several weeks, of the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ alleged roster violations. The investigation included CFL officials visiting team practices in Regina.

“As Commissioner, I am compelled to make decisions consistent with protecting the competitive balance within our League, the spirit of our rules and the integrity of our game. The recent conduct, behaviour and activities of the Saskatchewan Roughriders have compromised the reputation of the CFL.”

As per article I posted yesterday:
I'm also really confused by everything 3downnation is posting. They have continually posted stuff immediately after other more reliable sources have tweeted or reported information that is often at odds with what they post. All their contributors seem like trustworthy sources but none of the TSN/newspaper/online sources seem to jive at this point.

What's there to be confused about? Have you not been following the league for the last number of months?# Justin Dunk has been breaking all the big news stories lately. Covers the league for SportsNet, CFL.ca and 3DownNation. Best new young guy covering the league and it's not even close. Must follow on twitter if you follow on the league.

So, you're saying that you want the league to investigate in the media instead of behind closed doors?
Sorry, but in my opinion that is not what Professional Organizations do.

@PentonKirk:
No way Regina is only #CFL centre where shady roster stuff is happening. Doesn't mean #Roughriders don't deserve punishment.

I mean up until 5 minutes ago no one knew what was going on and no one was reporting anything consistent.

Well what do you consider the stuff the league just announced? Isn't that what I asked for? Now we know.
As predicted the punishments seem light and now we'll see if any other teams start to tighten up. I imagine the Riders won't be happy they were singled out.

Long story short, #CFL needs to completely revamp their policies when it comes to player procurement, injured lists, everything. It’s time.

As I said a couple of days ago, the Riders are a scum organization top to bottom.
A bunch of unethical, cheating, losers. Looking at the reaction of their fans to this, I'd say the majority of them also suffer from the same moral
Afflictions.

@TSNDaveNaylor: $60K 'Rider fine represents largest amount CFL could hand down. $25K at Commissioner's discretion plus $35K for several rule violations.

Its interested, i wonder if the CFL when they stepped in found out if these players were being paid and forced the Riders to put them on the books before they left town.
If they did with the Riders having a reduction in cap, they might be hit with a fine if they are over at the end of the season.

Wasn't that what the $26k salary cap reduction was for?

That doesn't remove the obligation to put those players on the books. The $26,000 dollar reduction is at the Commissioners discretion, but doesn't mean that the riders necessarily can now not count those players.

What I mean is, I was under the impression they picked a seemingly random number like $26k in salary cap reduction because that is an estimation of how much those players would/should have cost.
As in, why would they count them again if the cap reduction penalty was specifically calculated to be a representation of them counting? Then all it would do is double count them.
The further $60k was meant to simply be a monetary penalty and appears to have been the max allowed.
