Hopefully they don't go too far, assuming that doing so would be a cost that must eventually be passed on to consumers.

Well I just signed up for this offer, it was too good to pass up. I also finished my Christmas shopping today so it was hard to justify buying a new phone, and it was a pricey day... but again, way too hard to pass up. I'll be saving quite a bit in the long run. Going to save a bundle over telus.

So for a kids xmas present, who will only be in town, calling and texting...does the $25 plan make sense? Or with WindTab to get them a phone...any recommendations?
And yes I know next to nothing about cell phones so keep that in mind when answering please.

So... I'm sold on the plan but not sold on the phones. Thinking of just buying a SIM card and getting an unlocked MyTouch 3G Slide off Ebay. Good idea? Bad? Any other phones that would compete with Wind's offerings factoring the $150 WindTab credit?

I thought about it but then Egypt voted against Canada for the UN Security Council and WIND is majority owned by Egyptian Orascom Telecom Holding.
No thanks, they can keep their low cell phone plans.

They need to expand their 'zone' in order to make the unlimited offers more viable to people who travel more.
Even if you don't live in a rural area, lots of people still travel outside of the cities, and therefore outside of their 'zone.' And when you're outside their zone, their awesome plan isn't so awesome anymore.

And for those people, there's Bell/Rogers/Telus. If Wind had the same network as those three, they wouldn't need to discount their prices as much, which is not so good for people who don't need a bigger zone.
Of course, once I have the $40/month unlimited everything for life, then the more they expand their network the better.

There is no reason to think that they won't keep on expanding their zone. Setting up coverage in cities like Lethbridge, Regina and Brandon will only benefit them.
From there they'll move on to smaller places like Pincher Creek, or smaller towns.
When I say rural I'm not talking about the sticks. I'm talking about smaller towns or smaller cities than say, Calgary.

So how's a good way to get Rogers to lower a smartphone plan, since I can't justify the $500 cashout? any good techniques?

Do the math. Its what I am doing right now.
Prove to them that if you cancel, you will be ahead before your contract is up. Assuming this is a much better plan than what you currently have, you only need to prove that you won't be out that much more money by taking this.
My wife has a contract with rogers but I don't know where she put her paperwork. Anyone know for sure if it is $20 a month for each of data and voice? so $40 a month in total?

The 25 dollar plan is probably more then you need for anything. The kid can call (Alberta wide) and txt until the cows come home and it will stay at 25 bucks.
The only thing I'd try to add is voicemail.

I just got off the phone with Rogers to verify the $500 buyout on my wife's contract. Retentions is closed so I couldn't work out a deal but even canceling her contract and buying a new wind compatible phone (Bold 9700) for $250 with Windtab, we come out even in cash over the 2 years, not counting what we could sell her current phone for. The main difference being having the unlimited data/voice/text/long distance, which means we could get rid of the house phone.
I know she will ask in the morning, so I might as well get a head start. She is looking into getting a new smart phone (iPhone/Android), anyone know of a Wind-compatible Android phone?
Edit: To answer my own question - here is a list of AWS compatible phones.

Any timeline on this? The only thing holding me back from Wind is that I need my phone to work (without roaming) along that route.

This offer is apparently expiring Dec 24th instead of Dec 31st, so step on it for those who were wanting it!
