Out of curiosity, what would you define student success as Slava? I don't have any vote in Calgary, but I'm curious.

OMG when I worked for WAP, Helen would email non-stop CRAZY. She signed her emails something weird and capitalized a KKK in it. I'm pretty sure she's certifiable.

Why didn't you let Bruce know years ago that you knew who he was?

I don't live in Calgary at the moment, but I looked it up and my mom lives in ward 13, I'll suggest to her to vote for you.

I know Slava personally and believe him to be smart, principled and well intentioned. I would vote for him if I could, and have recommended him to a couple of friends. Good luck, Vic. Please email me your cell phone number so I can text you on election night for results.

Well within the context of the public education system I use that to mean students completing their diploma within 3 years of beginning grade 10. That is very general though and really what I want to see is more students who are prepared for the "real" world. I always think back to the Adidas commerical that ran during the 2006 world cup where it had crowds cheering for the enormous great soccer star of the future, and pointed out that this child could be born right now. (I'm paraphrasing, but that was the general idea).

Our education system is that way though. Societies innovators and those who will accomplish amazing feats in ten years time are students today. As a society we need to give them the foundation to achieve these goals and give them the tools to realize their full potential.

After re-reading this it all sounds somewhat trite...but that is my opinion and I do think that its very important!

I am not sure why I didn't tell bruce. No real reason actually. I guess the way that I found out though was through a couple of other posters who are mutual friends (and we were all friends in school, and hung out a lot!). I guess I just kind of figured that word had gotten to him about who I was and such and we just never really connected. I wish I had some great story to tell here, but that is that!

Thanks to CP for their great support thus far!

When Slava wins can we expect a victory rap song featuring Bruce?

Slava is the smart vote, though this Helen character might make for better soundbites.

That was meant to be tongue in cheek. Then for the first time I selected one of the random links on her "resources" tab. It is the "savethemales" one I selected to read as that sounded interesting.

Go read it yourself. By linking that she is making herself look batshiat crazy. That page reminds me of this exchange from So I Married an Axe Murderer:

Stuart Mackenzie: Well, it's a well known fact, Sonny Jim, that there's a secret society of the five wealthiest people in the world, known as The Pentavirate, who run everything in the world, including the newspapers, and meet tri-annually at a secret country mansion in Colorado, known as The Meadows.
Tony Giardino: So who's in this Pentavirate?
Stuart Mackenzie: The Queen, The Vatican, The Gettys, The Rothschilds, *and* Colonel Sanders before he went tits up. Oh, I hated the Colonel with is wee *beady* eyes, and that smug look on his face. "Oh, you're gonna buy my chicken! Ohhhhh!"
Charlie Mackenzie: Dad, how can you hate "The Colonel"?
Stuart Mackenzie: Because he puts an addictive chemical in his chicken that makes ya crave it fortnightly, smartass!

How do you think schools should do that?

Well to start with the system should be much more learner centered. Specifically at the high school levels we need to have students learning topics that they are actually interested in, and at a pace that works for them. Clearly I'm not saying that kids should all skip math/english and head to the "easy" courses, but there has to be some recognition for the trades or a path of study outside university education. We need kids to look at the trades and other skilled positions as viable careers, and we should encourage students to head towards these careers if they have interest there.

I am a firm believer that this type of learning and focusing students on areas where they have interest will create more engagement for our students, thereby seeing more of them graduate and pursue careers that they are interested in pursuing.

How can you accomplish that as a trustee, when the Government of Alberta sets the curriculum?

Some hooligan put a Pick Vic! sign in front of my place. I fixed it while I was out for a jog after all the wind we had the other night.

This lady had a huge sign on Canyon Meadows drive, and it was one of many that got knocked over...I really didn't feel like putting it back up for her though. It's really obnoxious compared to most if not all election signs I've seen, and I didn't see this thread until just now!

Its not purely a matter of curriculum though. The delivery of the education itself can be more focused to be on the learner. The Alberta Government has also released two documents called Inspiring Education and Inspiring Action and both of these documents allude to more learner centered education.

I also spoke with a principal of a middle school in my riding where they have really changed the delivery of education to be much more learner focused, and it has produced good results. I spoke with a number of parents with children in the school and not surprisingly the students love it! As a result the parents also prefer that methodology.

Its not a case where kids are being taught the wrong things, just a case where they might learn better if the pace and setting are modified for them.
