Yup, they did, and chances are one of two things happened. They had the kid clean up his mess, and called his or her parents who dispensed hard justice.

Or

They bought out the paddle.

Fact is that you can't paddle kids, yell at them, punish them or force them to do work anymore to atone for their sins.

Because the minute that you do little Jimmy/Jenny's parents are screaming to the press about how the school is picking on their darling who would never evvvvver to anything mean.

Your school suddenly gets served with papers detailing a law suit.

Or

The kid lies that the teacher touched him or her inappropriately in detention.

So to sum up, Kids suck and we could give them a better education by making them mine coal with their bare hands, or pave 150 miles of high way strip.

Does it matter? She is 12 years old..........she can't go to bloody jail now can she?

A little patience and creativity go along way to get kids to behave decently.....and teachers must be lacking these skills nowadays.

Stupid way to handle the whole thing....

Maybe the parents need to sign a legal document that outlines the measures teachers can/will take with "problem" kids....

Ya, it matters.

You are putting the blame on teachers here? Seriously? I cant' tell if you are being facetious or not.

Yeah, the teachers are to blame here. It is their job to deal with the kids appropriately......not by calling the cops over and creating drama over some doodling.

The cops actually showing up and making a scene is ridiculous as well...

I'm curious to know what you would consider an appropriate punishment in this case. Cleaning it at lunch? What if Little Miss Trouble goes home for lunch? What if Mom or Dad disagree with you? Staying after school to clean it up? Good luck.

I'm amazed that people are acting like this is some ranting, raving teacher who went from having no problems whatsoever with this student to "OMG YOU ARE DOODLING ON YOUR DESK, TIME FOR THE BRACELETS".

That being said, this definitely seems like a situation where the punishment does not fit the crime. I can't imagine teaching in a situation where the answer - however you arrived there - was "Call the cops the next time she doodles on her desk".

Any society that arrests (let alone handcuffs) a 12 year old for doodling on a desk is a society with much greater problems than doodling.

For those that were around to remember the Cold War, a time when a citizen would get shot for trying to leave East Germany, this kind of reminds me of the sorts of stories I would hear about how bad it was to live in a communist country.

If the Iron Curtain still existed, the East would pounce on this and tell their children, "If you are a young student in America, and you write on your desk, they will take you away in handcuffs and throw you in jail. You're lucky you don't live there."

This case probably has a lot to do with the disempowerment of teachers, but certainly demonstrates that the US has lost its way.

True, but if you were a Soviet kid, you wouldn't even ask the teacher what happened to little Igor because you already knew that he got "disappeared" for doodling on his desk.

Seriously though, you couldn't figure out how to work Hitler into your hyperbole?

Close, they would arrest little Igor tell him that the only way that the state would forgive him is if he became an informant for the state. Little Igor would turn his parents in who would be given a state televised show trial and sentenced to death for crimes against the state. 3 months later his parents would be allowed by the prison warden to write plea letters to the Premier for clemency. On the way back to their cells an executioner would jump out of an open door and shoot them in the head.

Meanwhile Igor would be sent to a re-education camp, 10 years later he would be released as a redeemed citizen, rise to power as a party member and eventually become the head of the KGB.
