Not quite the same, but I've got a brush with infamy as well.

In 1993, my Dad and I rented a house in Brantford Ontario and we had a roommate who we'd only known for a month or two. One weekend the roommate, who was a pretty greasy guy, had gone down to St. Catharines where he was from to hang out with some people and he was suppposed to be back on a Tuesday to start a new job.

He doesn't come home Tuesday and calls on Wednesday morning to tell us that if his boss calls we should tell him that he is detained in St. Catharines. So my Dad asks him what's going on and he tells him that he got picked up on some outstanding warrants and is in jail but should be out later that day.

Later that day on the news we hear that a suspect has been arrested in some unsolved rape/murder cases in St. Catharines. We immediately wonder if the roommate is the guy and are totally creeped out. Turns out to be even more bizarre. The guy they arrested that day was Paul Bernardo and our roommate was in the jail when Bernardo was brought in. They never shared a cell or anything since Bernardo was kept isolated at all times, but he did see him being taken back and forth between cells and the interrogation rooms.

When I was in school I knew a guy who commited a murder. He was a regular customer at the store I worked at, and one day he suddenly had a lot more disposable income. Turns out he just married a lady who was well off, and had access to her bank account. Then all of a sudden he had all kinds of "friends"- as when he took his friends out for food or drinks it was always his treat.

After a couple of months she saw how much he was spending and took back his ATM card. As qickly as they appeared; the friends disappeared.

A couple of weeks later he comes into the store, shakes all our hands and tells us goodbye- he is going away for a while. We all thought it was some sort of tall tale; until we hear on the news that he had turned himself in to police.

On Friday, the cops were here at work interviewing people and they took the guy's computer.
They didn't interview me but the took my name and phone number and said they would call me on Saturday and that they would like to talk to me about him.

They called me Saturday and asked me to come down to the Okotoks RCMP detachment so they could talk to me.

I went there and they asked me all sorts of questions about him... how well did I know him... who his friends were.... did he talk about what he was going to do... what was he like.... etc etc.

Here's the story that was in the newspaper...

Weird. My mom lives only about 3 or 4 kilometers away from where the victim lived...

Creepy.

One of my clients killed his room-mate with an axe, because the room-mate dared to ask for the rent.

Pro-bono, since I assume you didn't ask for a retainer?

Same thing happened to my brother and I. Our best friend growing up, who lived across the street, is currently in jail for killing two people in BC.

I can understand the seriousness of the OP's situation, but I couldn't help but think of...

Did you tell them that he had 'crazy eyes?'

How about that office birthday party where he cut the cake with 3 foot long machete?

Um, shouldn't we wait for a conviction before sentencing him to death?

You must be new here. On CP everyone is guilty until proven innocent and punishments must be unquestionably extreme.

Its in the by-laws somewhere...

Sounds exciting, frankly

Which is why we have this thread.

There are 8 people in this thread that know someone who has murdered someone else out of around 35 posters. That's nearly 23% of people in here know someone who murdered someone. That seems a little high to me. Where do you guys hang out?

Wow, I live two - three blocks from the Radisson and this is the first I heard about this. Guess I should read the news more. Strange, small world that we live in that you know a guy who alledgedly murdered someone 3 blocks from me and we are 1000's of km's apart.

That's the beauty of CalgaryPuck. What we don't have in this thread are the thousands of other posters that have never met a murderer chiming in to say that they've never met a murderer. Except me, of course.
