George Bush Sr., is that you? You seriously never seen a self checkout line?

You are right though, the self checkouts are a n oportunity to steal, which is probably why the Westbrook Walmart got rid of theirs. I'd love to know what their Shrinkage numbers were.

All the other stuff, I totally agree with especially the hot chick cashier.
No, it's generally true. The biggest strugglers are the older folks who yell and cry when the machine isn't able to guess which produce item they've just put on the scale. Then they get mad and ask for a manager to complain about the poor customer service and how these new machines are "ripping them off." It never once occurs to them that they still have the option to go to a cashier. Old people suck.

Most of the self checkouts were put in during the height of the boom when there was a severe employee shortage. Remember when you would go to Walmart and only four registers would be open with huge lineups at each one? Now the economy has slowed down and stores can actually find people to run the cash registers. If the cash registers hadn't of already been replaced by machines.

Also, there is no way that the number of jobs lost to self checkouts (not many) outweigh the number of jobs created in producing self checkout machines.

Last night I was in Walmart and they had 3 cashiers on duty and massive lineups at those tills. People were getting ticked off at the lineups and taking thier full carts to the self checkouts.

Though yeah. Self-checkout stations should be flagged as express lanes only. If you got 50 items, go wait in line.
Yes! This is my big point of irritation. Safeway has this problem too. And there isn't a way for the clerk to override it; she comes over and logs in and tells it to ignore the weight difference, but as soon as I add another item, it gets the same error.

yeah, I usually just scan the items, put them on the scale thing, pay, then put the groceries into the bag. Not a big issue since I only use self-checkout when I have a small amount of groceries but annoying nevertheless.

This way, people who are annoyed waiting in a long line ups get mad at their fellow grocery shoppers for being slow rather than at the cashiers for being slow.

Wow, its probably a good thing I'm not old then. I'd really hate to be generalized like that.

I don't want to brag or anything but I'm pretty sure I am totally awesome at self check out! I would be willing to go head to head with any cashier.

Has anyone experienced Wall Marts new express system? They have a robot voice that directs the next person in a single line to next open teller... it's actually pretty slick. I heard if you don't move after 15 seconds of being told where to go it will first honk at you then it will proceed attack you verbally.

why didnt you go to Shoppers or something like that. It seems like Superstore is the worst place to go for things like that seeing how its ALWAYS busy

I LOVE self-checkouts at Safeway. There are 4 at our store and one line - so even if you get one slowpoke, the line still moves pretty quickly. What I find funny is those who take a look at the lineup - which might have 7 people at the most - obviously think that it'll take them forever there, then go stand in a cashier line that has 5 people in it already. We're ususally out the door before they've reached the belt.

Oh for using reusable bags, for the first item, we have to put the item into the bag first and then set it down on the platform - if the bag is on the platform to start, the sensor really freaks out.

Meet me behind the gum racks on aisle 16 tonite after work. It could get ugly!

There is simply no way you could beat a cashier if you don't memorize those produce and bakery codes. I use to do 23 items/minute at superstore. They actually put you on a chart! hehe.

I've memorized the codes for the produce and bakery I usually buy. It's awesome to go through self-checkout when you're not fumbling around with the code-finder.

I use self checkouts no matter how much I have because I get to do it myself, don't have to deal with idiot cashiers (generally), and it pisses off people who have only 3 things.

Oh, and also there's usually a line for the cashiers but there's no to a small line for the self-checkout, and I'd rather annoy some other poor guy behind me than have to wait in a line.
