Hard to believe they have union representation, one would think in one of the 2 largest liberal cities in the USA that their union would at least get them suspension with pay.

Drunk/drug induced calls are wasteful? Regardless of the circumstances of the emergency, when there's a medical emergency EMS responds. Are auto accidents wasteful? I mean there's really no need to drive in Manhattan.
And yes, the city has 10mil people, and a comparable increase in emergency personnel. So I don't really see how that's an issue.
You can believe me on the union thing or you can google it yourself, it's going to get you the same result.

ohh really? I respectfully disagree.
I don't disagree that this is a moral failure on these behalf of these 2 or suggest that I would have done the same thing. I'm just saying it would be hypocritical on my behalf to suggest I would jump to my feet and do my job while on my scheduled break period particularily in a union type environment where such things can be frowned upon
and for the record I have 2 jobs and neither of them I take breaks on, I'm on call any time I'm not sleeping or drunk. Even when I'm at my second job I'm on call for my first. I'm just playing devils advocate here.

They medics are f'd. For those that are tossing in their 2 cents about insurance, malpractice, obligation, etc., I'm pretty confident that the insurance, malpractice, obligations, lawsuit implications of not aiding the woman are going to be far greater than if they would have helped during "a break."
As several posters have pointed out, a medic break is far different from a union-negotiated 15 minute break, they were in uniform, they were on scene and they refused to help. Pretty clear cut to me. Of course, CP requires devils advocates to throw legal and policy theories against the wall in hopes that something sticks just to be different...
What I would give to handle this lawsuit for the woman's next of kin. The City and the medics really don't have any choice other than to accept the first offer and thank the heavens that it wasn't for more.

This is one of those threads that EVERYBODY is going to read and say the usual "OMG that's terrible" crap and then thank eachother a bunch of times.
Hat's off to flameswin for making it interesting.

The funny thing is, at the time I thought that post was so over the top, outlandish and distasteful, that no one would possibly see it as anything but sarcasm (I hate green text and don't use it), and now here I am actually being accused of that post being my real opinion on the topic, and "back peddling". Oh good old CP.
Yes, I actually believe the EMT's were in the right for letting someone die because they just sat down with a sandwich.

Both Green, a six year veteran of the FDNY, and Jackson, maintained they were unfairly villainized after the incident.
Rennix's mother, Cynthia, called the EMTs' behavior "inhuman."
Union officials have said the two could have done more but point out the pair was working as dispatchers at fire department headquarters at the time. City officials said Jackson did call 911 before she left the store with her breakfast.

This doesn't sound like sarcasm to me.

This is one area where Quebec has it right, it is the law there that you help someone in peril. Too bad people need to be told.

This debate went on a month or so ago, so I"m not sure it's worth starting again, but that's a very simplified way of looking at things.

Stop responding to 8-month old posts. At any rate, Seinfeld already covered this a long time ago...

Yeah, that was, but then everyone else piles in with responses to posts from December. Of course, have to give Pinner a break, if his thread navigation is at all like his 4-way stop sign navigation...
I hope to see a similar follow up in the "girl fakes cancer" thread...
