If "best" is defined as highest selling than of course Nickelback is the best band of the decade. I would have rather they worded it "most popular" but then I'd be nit picking. It's kind of like saying McDonalds is the best restaurant in the world because it's sold the most cheeseburgers.

Nickelback isn't really my thing, but in a way I feel almost bad for them. By virtue of being so accessible they get played all the time. Great for those that are fans, but to people who don't want to hear it they just get more and more angry with them. If Nickelback got half the airplay nobody would give a damn, but because they seem to be everywhere all the time they just get hammered by critics. When's the last time you sat down and had a heated rant about how much you hate Default? That's pretty much what I'm getting at.

Of course they have money and fame, so when I say I feel bad for them it must be taken with a grain of salt. If I do have one gripe about them it's that any interview I see with them they seem to take their criticism quite sharply. I'm not sure how you could be in their position without a thick skin and the ability to ignore everything.

As for everything sounding the same I can't get on them too much ... I'm an Oasis fan.

I'm not gonna go sit in my living room in front of a fire with a glass of wine and throw on a Nickelback album.

They serve a purpose, for people like me who don't need to listen to artsy fartsy music that no one has ever heard of.

Not every song needs to have a meaning, a message, something that makes it unique from the rest. Just keep the levels moving and I am a happy person.
You know there are tons of great bands out there that lots of people have heard of that have way more to offer than Nickleback. You can get the pop/rock enjoyment without the ######y suckiness, it does exist.

If someone classifies music other than Nickleback as artsy fartsy... wow.

The list was topped by rapper Eminem, followed by Usher, Nelly, Beyoncé and Alicia Keys.
I am not a big Nickelback fan but I will gladly take them over any of the "artists" ahead of them on the list.

I hate Eminem, but he's still more talented as a musician than Nickleback. Same with Alicia Keys, who actually can sing and do more than play 4-chords on a guitar over and over.

Except he may like Nickleback? He may not hate them as much as you?

And? My point is that there are other great bands that aren't indie basement bands that nobody has heard of, which is exactly what he said earlier.

If Nickelback only had one or two hits, I'd probably think they were a decent band. As straightforward rock songs go, they can be listenable. It's because every song sounds exactly the same that I can't stand them. The 90's had Collective Soul, the 2000's have Nickelback.

Wait, so are you telling me that bands have been recording songs even after Iron Maiden did the Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner?....

That's a really cool anecdote.

I think some people are confusing not liking Nickleback with not liking popular music. There used to be a time when popular still meant that the music acts were pretty damn talented....the Beatles, Queen, Beach Boys, Elvis, all had amazingly lucrative careers and record sales, and are still considered to be great bands by so-called music snobs. Can anyone seriously say that Nickleback belongs in this category?

Btw, I think Alicia Keys is great regardless if she's on this top-seller list or not. It's a little girly, but I've always like her stuff.

That and Michael Bolton. I celebrate his entire catalog.

Ok, not that last one, I just wanted to throw in some Office Space in there.

All Billboard cares about is what sells - they are not making a qualitative judgment, but a quantitative one. No need to get all excited.

That being said, Nickelback is up there in the "worst major artists ever" category, which is unfortunately Canada-heavy what with Bryan Adams and Celine Dion also polluting the airwaves for far too long. However, there's no accounting for what putrid schlock rests the easiest upon the ears of the public, so what can you do?
